Buttercups and Hayloft are two adjacent barn conversions at Alkington Grange Barns near Whitchurch in Shropshire, let together to sleep sixteen across nine bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Both are rated five stars with a Gold award. The two buildings stand a few metres apart in a shared courtyard, which means a large party can spread out without anyone feeling cut off, and the long dining table in Buttercups seats all sixteen at once, a detail that matters more than people expect when booking for a big group. The barns date from the seventeenth century and sit on a family run, hundred acre working arable and livestock farm.
Buttercups sleeps ten plus two infants across six bedrooms. The ground floor is open plan, with a living area with a fifty inch television, Blu-ray and DVD player and French doors to the patio, a dining area, and a kitchen fitted with an electric range, microwave, American style fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. There is also a snug with a television and a separate WC. Upstairs, under the beams, are two double bedrooms, one en suite with a shower cubicle, and a single, served by a bathroom with a bath and shower attachment; a separate staircase leads to a further en suite double, a twin and a single with a second bathroom. Hayloft sleeps six plus an infant in three bedrooms with two bathrooms. Both barns include oil central heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi, with a wood burning stove, tumble dryer and a shared external utility room. Travel cots, high chairs and a stairgate are available on request, along with a welcome pack.
The shared facilities are the reason many groups choose Alkington Grange. There is an indoor heated swimming pool, roughly seven and a half by three and a half metres at a depth of one point two metres, open all year with booking slots allocated on arrival so each barn gets exclusive use; a multi sports court for mini tennis, badminton, basketball and football; and an enclosed toddler play area for under sixes with a slide and a wendy house. Add a woodland picnic area a short walk off, bird watching and stargazing areas, a barbecue lodge, a bike store, board and card games, and a hundred acres of natural grounds to walk in. Each barn has its own enclosed garden with furniture and a barbecue, and free off road parking for six cars with an electric charging point. Two dogs are welcome, and there is a fenced pond in the grounds worth knowing about with small children. Both barns are decorated for Christmas, and hen, birthday and corporate groups are accepted.
Whitchurch is around two miles away, a market town of medieval, Tudor and Georgian buildings gathered beneath St Alkmund's Church, internationally known for clock making since the 1650s, with independent shops, pubs and restaurants including Michelin starred cooking; a tower clock from the town can be seen on one of the barns. A pub is within a thirty minute walk and the station is three miles off. The Shropshire Union Canal is five minutes away, the Shropshire Way crosses the farm and the Mercian Cycle Path runs past it, with coarse fishing within five miles and horse riding a mile and a half off. Ellesmere and its lakes lie eleven miles away, Chester with its races, shopping, zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium about twenty five, and Ironbridge Gorge, Attingham Park, Hawkstone Follies, RAF Cosford, Shrewsbury, Alton Towers and Trentham are all within a day's reach.
