Garden Bank is a two bedroom barn conversion on an organic farm in a quiet corner of the Scottish Borders, three miles from Kelso, sleeping four on a single level. It is rated four stars with a Gold award and was refurbished in 2021. The view is the reason to book: the cottage looks out across the farm and rolling countryside, over the Tweed and Eden valleys, with the Cheviot Hills on the horizon. It suits a couple, a family or two couples equally well, and it is particularly inviting in winter, with its own biomass heating and an endless supply of hot water.
The sitting room faces south, with French windows, a wood burner, a dining table, sofa and chairs and a smart TV, and a door onto the patio. The small kitchen has been refurbished to a practical design, very well equipped and open to the sitting and dining area, which makes the whole space sociable rather than cramped. There is a king size bedroom with an en suite shower and a twin room with a striking wet room, both shower rooms tiled in travertine. Wifi, digital television, a dishwasher, microwave, freezer, coffee maker, kettle, toaster and a laundry room are all provided, along with towels, bed linen and a welcome pack, and a cot and high chair are available. One dog is welcome, with dog friendly walks within fifteen minutes.
Outside, the private enclosed patio garden has recliners, swing chairs, garden furniture, an outdoor bench, sun loungers and a barbecue, and it is the natural place for evening drinks with that valley view. The location is dark sky friendly with a bird watching area, and parking for two cars is provided along with an electric car charging point. On the farm there is a tennis court, with coaching available, and lovely walks beside the River Eden where you will see the organic sheep grazing and may spot otters, kingfishers, swans and deer in the woodland. The farm grows organic oats and flowers, sold in the farm shop along with fresh eggs and other produce, and there are small animals to meet. Meals can be delivered to the door if you would rather not cook. Short breaks run all year, the cottage is decorated for Christmas, and stag, hen, birthday and corporate groups are accepted.
Kelso, three miles off, is a bustling market town with a farmers' market, the ruins of Kelso Abbey, good shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, and Floors Castle, the largest inhabited castle in Scotland, on its doorstep; the Terrace Cafe there serves excellent food and sells dishes to take away. Local favourites include the Cobbles Inn with its log fire, The Contented Vine, Lemon and Thyme, the Waggon Inn, Caroline's and Hoot and Cat for coffee and cake. Abbotsford House and Mellerstain House are close, with Glentress and Go Ape at Peebles for mountain biking and high wires. Walking in the Borders or over the border in Northumberland, cycling, golf, horse riding, fishing and wildlife watching fill the days, and the Melrose Sevens, Kelso Races and Border Union Show punctuate the year. Edinburgh is forty five miles away and the nearest station eighteen.
