Edington Mains House is a spacious single storey house in the Scottish Borders near Berwick upon Tweed, sleeping eight in four bedrooms with four bathrooms and a Gold award. Everything is on one level, with an access ramp, wide doorways and all bedrooms and bathrooms on the ground floor, which makes it a genuinely practical choice for a group with mixed mobility rather than one that merely claims to be. The house has its own private enclosed garden and looks out over open farmland, with rural and garden views from the windows and a quiet setting seven miles from Berwick.
The large dining kitchen is the centre of the house, with a television snug attached and a pool table, which tends to determine where everybody ends up. There is also a sun lounge, a conservatory and a large lounge with a wood burning stove for the evenings, and a piano for anyone who plays. The kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher, microwave, freezer, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, washing machine and tumble dryer, and the dining table seats eight. Four bedrooms hold two king size beds, a double and two singles, with two z beds available in addition, and each has a bathroom to itself. Wifi, digital television, towels and bed linen are all provided.
Outside there is an enclosed private garden with a private hot tub, a pleasant thing to have at the end of a day walking the Borders or the Northumberland coast. Ample private parking is provided. One dog is welcome, short breaks run all year round, and birthday celebrations are accepted. The setting is rural and quiet, with a local shop within five miles and a supermarket within ten, so it is worth arriving with the car stocked.
Berwick upon Tweed, seven miles off, is a historic walled town on the coast with the station, midway between Edinburgh and Newcastle. The Borders offer Floors Castle at Kelso, Paxton House on the Tweed and the Southern Upland Way for long distance walking, while St Abb's Head National Nature Reserve is one of the best seabird sites on this coast. Beaches are close, and the Northumberland coast with its castles at Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Lindisfarne lies just south. Local activities include walking, golf, tennis, swimming, paddle boarding, river, sea and fly fishing, beachcombing, bird watching and country pursuits. For a group wanting space, level accommodation, a games room and a hot tub in quiet countryside within reach of two coastlines, this covers a good deal of ground.
