Edingtonhill House is a large country house in the heart of the Scottish Borders near Berwick upon Tweed, sleeping twenty two across seven bedrooms with six bathrooms and a Gold award. It is a house built for gatherings, with an indoor heated swimming pool and sauna under its own roof, a comfortable lounge with an open log fire, and a big kitchen and dining room where a party of twenty can actually eat together. The setting is secluded and rural, with views over fields and farmland, and the coast is within reach, which makes this an unusually versatile base for a family reunion, a celebration or a wedding party.
The seven bedrooms are comfortable and nicely decorated: a master double with a balcony and en suite, a master family suite with en suite, two large family rooms, a twin bedded room on the ground floor, and two further doubles with en suites. The large fitted kitchen is well equipped and built around an oil fired Aga, with an attractive dining room adjacent seating sixteen, a dishwasher, microwave, freezer, coffee maker, washing machine, tumble dryer, kettle and toaster. A wood burning stove and the open log fire in the lounge handle the colder months, and there is a sitting area above the pool hall which children tend to claim as their own. Wifi and digital television are provided, along with towels, bed linen, a welcome pack, a cot and a high chair.
The leisure facilities are what set this house apart. As well as the indoor heated pool and sauna there is an outdoor hot tub, a jacuzzi and a swim spa, so there is somewhere to soak whatever the Borders weather is doing. Outside, the private garden has a patio, a barbecue, garden furniture, swings and a children's play area, and the location is dark sky friendly with a designated stargazing area. Ample private parking is provided, and there is an access ramp with one ground floor bedroom and bathroom and a walk in shower for guests who need level accommodation. Two dogs are welcome, and short breaks are available all year round, with hen parties, birthday parties and weddings all accepted.
Berwick upon Tweed, ten miles away, is a historic walled town on the coast midway between Edinburgh and Newcastle, and it is the nearest station. The village nearby has a pub, with country pubs serving food in the area and a local shop within five miles. St Abb's Head National Nature Reserve is a fine day out for its seabird cliffs, and the Borders offer Floors Castle, Mellerstain, Abbotsford and the Mary Queen of Scots House at Jedburgh. The Northumberland coast with its castles and empty beaches is immediately south, and golf courses are plentiful in both directions. For a large group wanting somewhere genuinely self contained, with enough to do on site that a wet day causes no difficulty, this is a strong choice.
