Field Barn is a single storey barn conversion for two at Checkley in Herefordshire, sleeping two in one bedroom and rated five stars with a Gold award. It is a recent conversion, designed from the outset as a couple's retreat, and the result is modern and warm rather than merely smart. The setting is quiet and rural, with views over fields, farmland, hills and woodland, roughly midway between the Wye Valley and the Malvern Hills and less than two miles from Westons Cider. Hereford and its station are seven miles away. Two dogs are welcome, and the barn is open for short breaks all year round.
Everything is on one level: an open plan kitchen, dining and sitting area, the bedroom and the bathroom, with level access throughout and a walk in shower with a shower seat, which makes this a realistic option for guests with limited mobility. The bedroom has a super king size Hypnos bed, and the bathroom is fitted with a large shower. The kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher, microwave, freezer, coffee maker, kettle and toaster, and there is a washing machine and tumble dryer. Underfloor heating and a wood burning stove cover the colder months, and air conditioning, still unusual in a British holiday cottage, makes a real difference in a hot summer. Wifi and digital television are provided, along with towels, bed linen and a welcome pack. Original features have been kept where they survived. A private steam room is available on site.
Outdoors, the patio garden is fully fenced and securely enclosed, with bedded plants and a covered seating area positioned for the views, a good place to sit out with a glass of wine as the light goes. There is a log burner in the outdoor area and a barbecue, and sun loungers are provided. The site is dark sky friendly with a designated bird watching area, so both stargazing and an early morning with binoculars are genuinely on offer. Parking is free and private, on a private driveway with space for up to five cars, and there is an electric car charging point. A cot, high chair and stairgate are available, and the barn is decorated with a tree and decorations at Christmas.
A dog friendly pub in a nearby village lies within a thirty minute walk, with more country pubs, restaurants and cafes within five miles, and dog friendly walks start within fifteen minutes. Herefordshire has an unusually long list of things to do: Hereford Cathedral and its Mappa Mundi, the Museum of Cider, the Black and White House Museum and the Black and White Village Trail, Goodrich Castle, Croft Castle, Berrington Hall, Hampton Court Castle, Eastnor Castle, Arthur's Stone, the Brockhampton Estate and a string of fine gardens including Hergest Croft, Stockton Bury, Ralph Court and the Weir. The Wye Valley, the Malvern Hills and Offa's Dyke Path are all close for walking, with canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, river fishing, cycling, horse riding, golf, falconry and clay pigeon shooting nearby. The Three Counties Show and Ledbury Poetry Festival are highlights of the local year.
