Lower Canwood is a five bedroom country house at Checkley in Herefordshire, sleeping ten with five bathrooms and a Gold award, set in the countryside of the Wye Valley about seven miles from Hereford. Surrounded by rolling fields and farmland with views over the valley and its own gardens, it is a house built for groups: family gatherings, reunions and breaks with friends where everyone wants to be together but not on top of one another. The setting is quiet and genuinely rural, and the property is noted as a fireworks free location, which is a real consideration for anyone travelling with a nervous dog. Two well behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement.
Inside, country inspired interiors are combined with modern comforts. The spacious lounge has a wood burning stove and opens to the garden, and the well equipped kitchen and dining area seats ten, which keeps meals sociable rather than staggered. Underfloor heating runs through the house, and there is a dishwasher, microwave, freezer, coffee maker, washing machine, tumble dryer, kettle and toaster, along with wifi and digital television. The five bedrooms are all well presented, three of them with en suite facilities, and one is a ground floor king size room with its own en suite, which makes the house workable for multi generational groups and for anyone who would rather not tackle stairs. Towels, bed linen and a welcome pack are provided, with a cot, high chair and stairgate available.
The gardens are attractive and enclosed, with a patio, garden furniture, sun loungers and a barbecue, and plenty of outdoor seating for eating outside or simply sitting with the view. A private games room holds a pool table, table tennis and a supply of children's toys, which earns its keep on a wet afternoon. Hot tub hire can be arranged at additional cost. Ample free private parking takes five cars on a private driveway. The location is dark sky friendly, the house is decorated with a tree and decorations at Christmas, and short breaks are available all year round, with birthday and corporate groups accepted.
A dog friendly pub in a nearby village lies within a fifteen minute walk, with more pubs, restaurants and cafes within a mile and five miles, a shop within five and a supermarket within ten. Hereford, seven miles off, has the cathedral and Mappa Mundi, the Museum of Cider, the Black and White House Museum and the Waterworks Museum, and Ledbury is the nearest useful station eight miles away. Walking and cycling routes start at the door, with the Wye Valley, Offa's Dyke Path and the Malvern Hills National Landscape all close. Days out include Croft Castle, Berrington Hall, Hampton Court Castle, Eastnor Castle, the Brockhampton Estate, Arthur's Stone, Hergest Croft, Stockton Bury and Ralph Court Gardens, Westonbury Mill Water Gardens, the Weir Garden, Queenswood Country Park, Newbridge Farm Park, Small Breeds Farm Park and the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo. Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, archery, clay pigeon shooting, paintballing and golf are all available nearby, and the Ledbury Poetry Festival, Bromyard Folk Festival, Lakefest and Nozstock fill out the summer.
