About Riverside
Riverside is a spacious detached cottage at Westport in Somerset, extended and refurbished a few years back but keeping a good deal of cottage character: beamed ceilings, solid wood floors, a log burner and an open fire. It sleeps six in three bedrooms, holds a Gold award and takes three dogs and cats.
The large kitchen diner has all the modern appliances, including a dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave, freezer and coffee maker, with patio doors opening onto the gravelled drive and then the lawn, which looks out over fields and farmland. There is a boot room, a laundry room, board games and a welcome pack, and towels and bed linen are provided along with a cot, high chair and stairgate.
The wildlife is a genuine feature here: shy roe deer and woodpeckers are regular, and one couple counted twenty-three different species in the garden during a week's stay. There is a birdwatching area, a large enclosed patio garden with a barbecue and furniture, and parking for three cars on a private driveway.
The canal towpath is just opposite the cottage and the droves make good level walking. The Barn Owl is less than a hundred yards away for supper, and there are plenty of good pubs and restaurants a little further, including the Lamb and Lion at Hambridge, the Devonshire Arms at Long Sutton, the Barrington Boar and the Firehouse at Curry Rivel. The National Trust's Barrington Court, Montacute House and Forde Abbey are all drivable, along with the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, the Somerset wetlands, Clarks Village for bargains, and the Jurassic Coast. Historic Bath is twelve miles, Taunton has the nearest station, and Glastonbury and Wells are within reach. In summer the French doors from the sitting room open to a covered patio for watching the sun go down; in winter the open fire earns its keep.
