This is a three bedroom cottage at Williamscraig Holiday Cottages near Linlithgow in West Lothian, sleeping six with two bathrooms and rated four stars with a Gold award. The location is the clever part: unspoilt Lothian countryside, with rural views from the windows, yet Edinburgh is twenty minutes by train from Linlithgow station nearby. That combination means you can spend one day walking in open country and the next in the middle of Scotland's capital without moving base or taking the car into the city. The interiors are of a high standard, and each cottage on the site has its own private outdoor hot tub.
The cottage has a comfortable, well presented living area and a well equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, microwave, freezer and washing machine, and wifi runs throughout. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms give a family or two couples plenty of room, with en suite facilities to the main bedroom. Towels and bed linen are provided, along with a cot, high chair and stairgate for younger guests. The whole place is set up for a relaxed self catering week rather than a bare minimum stay, and the hot tub, private to the cottage, is what most guests remember: a soak outdoors with nothing but countryside in view.
The site is family friendly, with a shared play park including a big basket swing, ordinary swings and a seesaw, which keeps children occupied without anyone having to get in the car. There is a patio, parking, and a total of seven cottages on the site, six of them with three bedrooms and one with two, so the setting stays quiet and low key. Short breaks are available all year round, midweek and at weekends, and hen parties are accepted. A local pub is nearby.
Edinburgh is the obvious draw, with the castle, the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace, the Old Town, Arthur's Seat, the National Museum of Scotland, the Scottish National Gallery, the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh Zoo, Princes Street Gardens and rather more restaurants and bars than one holiday can cover. Glasgow, with its galleries, restaurants and theatres, is about thirty minutes by train from Linlithgow. Closer to hand, Linlithgow Palace is worth an hour, Stirling Castle is half an hour's drive, and the Pentland Hills Regional Park, also about half an hour away, gives walking, cycling and horse riding on a decent scale. Golf courses are plentiful in this part of Scotland, and walking routes start close to the cottages. For a base that manages to be both rural and genuinely convenient for two major cities, this is hard to beat.
