The Keepers is a three bedroom cottage in Highland Perthshire, standing in the sixteen acre grounds of Farleyer Lodge near Aberfeldy, with all three bedrooms en suite. It is rated four stars with a Gold award and is one of a small group of family run holiday cottages on and around Castle Menzies Farm, each independent and set apart from the others with its own character. The position is in the picturesque Upper Tay Valley, two miles from Aberfeldy, amid some of Scotland's grandest scenery, and the cottage has been renovated to a high standard with a modern, comfortable feel throughout.
Inside, the layout is straightforward and well thought out: a comfortable sitting area, a modern kitchen and a dining table seating six. Wifi and digital television are provided, along with a dishwasher, microwave, freezer, coffee maker, washing machine and tumble dryer, and central heating runs throughout. Each of the three bedrooms has its own bathroom, which removes the usual morning queue when two families share. One bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor with level access throughout that level and grab rails by the shower, so the cottage works for guests who find stairs difficult, though there are steps up to the property itself. Towels, bed linen and a welcome pack are all included, and a cot and high chair are available.
Outside there is a shared garden with a patio and the cottage's own outdoor dining area and barbecue, well used on long summer evenings this far north. The setting is rural and on a hillside, dark sky friendly, and secure free off road parking is provided for four cars. Up to two dogs are welcome, as are cats, and the cottage is decorated with a tree and decorations at Christmas. Short breaks run all year round, and hen parties and birthday groups are accepted. Three good rural restaurants are within walking distance, with a pub within a mile and more eating out in Aberfeldy within five miles.
Aberfeldy was first made famous by Robert Burns and is now Scotland's first Fairtrade town and home of the Black Watch. Loch Tay, the largest loch in Perthshire, is six miles away, framed by mountains and hillside farms, popular with sailors and watersports enthusiasts and home to eighteen ancient crannogs. To the north, Glen Lyon is often called the longest, loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland. This is Big Tree Country, combining lush low ground with some of Scotland's highest mountains, and it sits in the geographical centre of the country, with Loch Ness, Oban, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews and Inverness all within about two hours. Local attractions include Castle Menzies, Dewar's Aberfeldy Distillery, the Birks of Aberfeldy, the Scottish Crannog Centre, Blair Castle, Killiecrankie, Queen's View, Pitlochry, Scone Palace and Ben Lawers. In season there is golf, fishing and fly fishing, hill walking, distillery visits, theatre, shooting, deer stalking, pony trekking, clay pigeon shooting, gold panning, white water rafting, boating and kayaking. Pitlochry is the nearest station, ten miles away, with Perth thirty five miles off.
