About Menzies Steading

Menzies Steading is a five bedroom roundhouse style conversion at Castle Menzies Farm near Aberfeldy in Highland Perthshire, sleeping ten with every bedroom en suite. It is rated four stars with a Gold award. The shape of the building makes it genuinely unusual: the main living space sits under beamed ceilings around a central fireplace, which gives the house a sociable, gathered feel that a conventional layout rarely achieves. The setting is the picturesque Upper Tay Valley, two miles from Aberfeldy, south facing with views across the valley beside historic Castle Menzies, and the Cairngorms National Park is around twenty one miles away.

The large open plan lounge has a nine seater sofa, a fifty inch television and that central fire, with a second cosier lounge alongside for reading or a quieter evening. The kitchen is high quality and well equipped for group self catering, and the dining area seats twelve, complete with a grand piano for anyone inclined to provide the evening's entertainment. All five bedrooms have modern en suite facilities: two with super king or twin zip and link beds and en suite wet rooms; an open plan master with a super king bed and an accessible en suite with bath, shower, basin and WC; a fourth with super king or twin beds and an en suite with bath and shower; and a fifth with a double bed, a mezzanine balcony, a sofa bed and an en suite with bath and shower. Wifi, digital television, a dishwasher, microwave, freezer, coffee maker, washing machine and tumble dryer are provided, along with towels, bed linen, a welcome pack, a cot and a high chair.

Bifold doors open onto a private enclosed courtyard with decking, garden furniture, outdoor sofas and a gas barbecue, which is where most of a summer evening tends to go. There is level access throughout the ground floor with one ground floor bedroom and bathroom and grab rails by the shower, though there are steps up to the property itself. Secure free off road parking takes four cars, the location is dark sky friendly, and the house is decorated with a tree and decorations at Christmas. Up to two dogs are welcome, short breaks run all year round, and hen parties and birthday groups are accepted.

Three good rural restaurants are within walking distance and a pub within a mile, with more eating out in Aberfeldy five miles off. Aberfeldy is Scotland's first Fairtrade town and home of the Black Watch, six miles from Loch Tay, the largest loch in Perthshire, which is popular for sailing and watersports and home to eighteen ancient crannogs. Glen Lyon to the north is often called the longest, loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland. This is Big Tree Country, and the Cairngorms and Tay Forest Park are both close for walking, cycling and wildlife. Castle Menzies, Dewar's Aberfeldy Distillery, the Birks of Aberfeldy, the Scottish Crannog Centre, Blair Castle, Killiecrankie, Queen's View, Pitlochry and Ben Lawers are all nearby, with Perth and Scone Palace around thirty four miles away. Golf, fishing and fly fishing, hill walking, distillery visits, theatre, shooting, deer stalking, pony trekking, clay pigeon shooting, white water rafting, boating and kayaking are all available in season. Pitlochry is the nearest station, ten miles off.
