Kirkandrews House is a barn and cottage conversion set in parkland next to a fifteenth-century pele tower, overlooking the River Border Esk near Longtown in Cumbria. It sleeps fifteen in seven bedrooms with five bathrooms, holds a Gold award and takes one dog. It is Grade II listed, and the setting is unspoilt countryside with the river in front of the house.
Downstairs there is a sitting room with a log fire, a dining room, a hall, a TV room and a kitchen, along with an en-suite double bedroom which makes it straightforward to include elderly or less mobile members of the party. Oil-fired central heating, an Aga in the kitchen and fires in the sitting room, hall and TV room keep the house warm, and logs are provided. The well-equipped kitchen has everything needed to cook for this many: alongside the Aga there is an electric oven with a ceramic hob, a dishwasher, microwave, large larder fridge, washing machine and tumble dryer, with the freezer in the boiler room just outside the back door.
Upstairs are two en-suite double bedrooms, three further doubles and a single, with two family bathrooms. Six of the beds are super-king, and Z beds and cots are available along with a high chair, stairgate, welcome pack, towels and bed linen. There is a widescreen television and DVD player and an iPhone-docking music player, and wifi throughout, though it is unlimited rather than fast.
The hall has a pool table and table tennis, and outside there is croquet, boules and badminton along with beautiful gardens, a barbecue and parking for up to ten cars. The owners have a tennis court nearby available by arrangement. Fishing is possible on site by arrangement, with free fishing close to the front of the house and additional fishing in season at extra cost, all on a catch-and-return basis; coarse fishing for chub runs year-round and the salmon season from February to the end of October.
The Sportsman's restaurant at the Marchbank Hotel is half a mile away, with the Penton Bridge Inn nine miles and the Hidden River Cafe at Easton nearby. Longtown, three miles off, has a petrol station, cash machines, a Spar, bakery, butcher, newsagent with post office, pubs and takeaways. Carlisle, twelve miles away with the nearest station, has the major supermarkets, national chains, restaurants and bars along with its famous castle, cathedral and museum, and the Gretna Gateway discount shopping centre is five miles off. Gretna Green, about six miles, is the wedding capital of the world and many past guests have used the house as a base for their own. The Langholm hills, the Pennines, Hadrian's Wall, the Solway Coast and the northern Lake District, about half an hour away, are all accessible.
