Hillside Croft is a Grade II listed eighteenth-century sandstone cottage between the market towns of Ashbourne and Belper, among pasture land in the Derbyshire Dales next to both the Peak District National Park and the Staffordshire Moorlands. It sleeps up to sixteen in five bedrooms, holds a Gold award and has its own private hot tub.
The restoration has been done well, with prominent oak beams throughout, stone-mullioned and leaded windows and an assortment of revealed timber and stonework. Handmade antique pine furniture and a mix of old stone, oak and tiled floors with rugs add to it, and central heating plus log stoves downstairs keep it warm.
The farmhouse kitchen has antique pine units, a double French enamel sink, stone worksurfaces and tiled flooring, looking over a pretty rear garden planted with herbs, blackberries and fruit trees for guests to use. The dining room seats ten to twelve comfortably at its large farmhouse table with additional seating for up to sixteen, and a log burner set in a striking inglenook fireplace makes it a genuinely congenial room for entertaining. The lounge is warmed by a second log burner and seats ten across three sofas and an armchair.
There are five bedrooms, four doubles and a twin, giving a base capacity of ten, with four low-lying single beds and two single bed-chairs among the rooms taking the total to sixteen. One bedroom is en-suite, and a cot, high chair, welcome pack, towels and bed linen are provided.
Outside, landscaped flower gardens enclose the cottage, with a private hot tub in a sheltered patio area equipped with a hardwood table and chairs, a barbecue, a fire pit and a chimenea. Parking is on site.
A pub sits in the nearby village. Ashbourne, five miles off and known as the gateway to the Peak District, is a fine Georgian market town on the southern edge of the White Peak, and Derby has the nearest station. Carsington Water and the Peak District National Park are both close. The house suits large gatherings of family and friends, walking or activity holidays and special occasions, and the owners take hen and stag parties, birthdays and corporate stays.
