The Old Coach House is a seventeenth-century limestone cottage in the small village of Aldwark, in the heart of the Peak District National Park, next to fields and unspoilt countryside. It sleeps seven in two bedrooms, holds a four-star rating with a Gold award, and welcomes dogs and cats. This is walking and hiking country, and it is a good base for the area's better-known attractions too.
Inside there is a cosy lounge with exposed wooden beams and a warming open fire, along with a wood-burning stove, a well-equipped kitchen and diner seating six, and a family bathroom with a bath and shower over. The two bedrooms are a double and a bunk room, with a Z bed, sofa bed and cot giving the flexibility to sleep seven. Wifi and digital television are provided along with board games, a card table, a welcome pack, towels and bed linen, and a high chair and stairgate are available.
The gardens are generous and the real selling point for families: a children's play area with swings, a slide, a sand pit, a Wendy house and football goalposts, along with a garden swing seat and sun loungers so the adults get a look in too. There is a walled garden, a secure private garden with furniture and benches, a patio, a barbecue and a BBQ lodge, and secure parking for four cars. Stabling and a paddock are available if you want to bring a horse, and there are small farm animals to meet. The site is dark-sky friendly.
A dog-friendly pub is a short walk away and there are places to eat within a mile. Matlock, seven miles off, is twenty minutes' drive with the usual amenities, and Cromford has the nearest station. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Carsington Water, Dovedale, Lumsdale Valley, Cromford Mills, Masson Mills, the Heights of Abraham, Gulliver's Kingdom, Matlock Bath, Crich Tramway Village, Hardwick Hall, Kedleston Hall, Calke Abbey and Poole's Cavern are all within reach, with Alton Towers a drive away. The popular villages and towns of Wirksworth, Bakewell, Ashbourne and Buxton are all nearby. The owners take birthday celebrations and weddings.
