Hawkings Hideaway is a shepherd's hut set in a private five-acre field on a farm on the outskirts of Exmoor National Park near Knowstone in Devon. It sleeps two, holds a five-star rating with a Gold award and takes one dog for a small charge. It is a larger hut than most, which shows in the details.
The kitchen area is comparatively roomy, with a hob, a breakfast bar and extras like a kettle, toaster and Nespresso machine, which puts this at the more luxurious end of glamping. A warming woodburner supplies both heat and atmosphere, and the cabin-style bed has a window right beside it with curtains, which makes it genuinely snug. There is also an outdoor loo cubicle and a rustic shower cubicle, giving more privacy than a shared facilities block. Bed linen and towels are provided.
Outside the hut is nestled by trees, and a generous decked area gives views that stretch out across the surrounding countryside; it is a good spot to watch the sun go down or take a morning coffee. There is a wood-fired hot tub and a fire pit, and a pizza oven can be booked by arrangement. There is secure parking and an electric vehicle charging point.
North Devon around here is a walker's country of expansive moorland, rolling hills and lush valleys, with dramatic coast a drive away. The Two Moors Way, a coast-to-coast path running from Lynmouth on the north coast to Ivybridge in Dartmoor, passes through the region, and there is a Michelin-starred pub a short stroll away. Dulverton is close, Tiverton is thirteen miles, Barnstaple twenty, and Westward Ho! beach twenty-eight.
