Lydensign is a detached cottage at Hemyock in the Blackdown Hills of east Devon, with parts of it dating back over two hundred years. Low ceilings, beams and open fireplaces give it character and keep it warm. It sleeps six in three bedrooms, holds a Gold award and welcomes dogs. It stands in almost an acre of lawns.
The kitchen is well equipped and the bathroom modern, which between them make the cottage an easy place to settle into. There is a wood-burning stove alongside the open fires, a microwave, freezer, coffee maker and washing machine, wifi, and a welcome pack, towels and bed linen. A cot, high chair and stairgate are available.
Outside there is an enclosed private garden and patio, and a pond where you can sit and listen to the wildlife on the doorstep; the views run out across rolling hills. Parking takes four cars. A number of guests are now returning with their own children to share holidays they remember from their own childhoods, which tells you something about the place.
The Blackdown Hills are a National Landscape and the countryside around is quiet and largely undiscovered. A pub is a short walk away, and there is a good spread of places to eat within a short drive, including the Culm Valley Inn at Culmstock, the Half Moon at Clayhidon, the Candlelight at Bishopswood, the Drewe Arms at Broadhembury and the Catherine Wheel in Hemyock, with the Holt in Honiton a little further. There is fishing, horse riding, walking and golf nearby, the Quantock Hills and Dunster Castle are within range, Taunton has the nearest station and Exeter is thirty miles. The local carnival season runs from September to November, and the Ottery St Mary tar barrels on 5 November are worth seeing once.
