Garden Cottage is a converted farm building at Twistgates Farm in the Blackdown Hills near Honiton, and the exposed beams and stonework make its former life obvious the moment you step in. It sleeps three, holds a Gold award and takes one dog by prior arrangement. The Blackdown Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that has been practically untouched by time and found by relatively few.
Downstairs is an open-plan room with a fully fitted kitchen, a dining table and chairs and very comfortable seating around a wood-burning stove, which is what makes the place feel like a retreat rather than a rental. Upstairs is a large bedroom with a king-size bed and ample room for the owners to add a child's bed for an additional charge, along with a bathroom with a handheld shower over the bath. Central heating runs through, and the price includes all heating, electricity, bed linen and towels. A cot and high chair are available on request, there is a smart television and wifi, and the fridge has a freezer compartment with additional freezer space on site. The cottage is non-smoking.
Outside is a very secluded enclosed patio with garden furniture, which is the right place for an alfresco meal, and guests are welcome to use the meadow area in front of the two neighbouring cottages. Parking is ample and free, a communal laundry room on site has a washing machine and tumble dryer for a small charge, and an electric vehicle charging point is available if requested in advance.
The setting suits a romantic break or a couple with a small child equally well. Good walking runs through unspoilt countryside full of wildflowers, birds and animals, and there is a birdwatching area on site. The A30 and A303 are less than five minutes away, which makes this a practical base for Devon, Dorset and Somerset with the Jurassic Coast on the doorstep. A pub sits in the nearby village. Honiton, about seven miles, is a market town on a long straight Roman road, famous for lace and pottery, with independent shops, restaurants, cafes, a notable cluster of antique shops and a public art gallery in the former home of the painter Thelma Hulbert. Exeter is twenty miles, and Beer, the Donkey Sanctuary, Pecorama, RHS Rosemoor, Killerton, Dartmoor and Exmoor are all within reach. The cottage is open all year including Christmas, New Year and Easter, with two other cottages and an apartment on the farm.
Additional charges: No additional cleaning fees.
