Weathervane Cottage is a former milking parlour at Twistgates Farm, tucked away in the Blackdown Hills near Honiton, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that has been largely untouched by time and discovered by relatively few. It sleeps five in three bedrooms, holds a Gold award and takes two dogs by arrangement. The exposed beams and stonework were kept through the conversion, and everything is on one floor with just a small step between the living and sleeping areas, which makes it work for a family of all ages.
The large open-plan reception room combines a fully fitted kitchen, dining space and very comfortable seating around a wood-burning stove, with views and access out to the meadow beyond. A door leads from it to an enclosed patio garden with furniture. The three bedrooms are a double with an en-suite basin and toilet, a twin and a single, served by a shower room with a large shower; note there is no bath. Central heating, all electricity, bed linen and towels are included in the price, along with a smart television and wifi, and a cot and high chair are available on request. A communal laundry room on site has a washing machine and tumble dryer for a small charge, and there is a charging point for an electric vehicle if requested in advance. The cottages are non-smoking.
Ample parking sits near the cottage, and it shares its outlook over the meadow, open to all guests, with neighbouring Meadow Cottage. A self-contained ground-floor twin room with en-suite shower, television and hot drink facilities can be rented alongside a booking here if you need an extra bedroom or friends want to visit for a couple of nights, and two other cottages and an apartment for two are also on the farm.
The surrounding countryside is unspoilt and full of wildflowers, birds and animals, with good walking from the door and a birdwatching area on site. The A30 and A303 are less than five minutes away, which makes the cottage a practical base for Devon, Dorset and Somerset, with the Jurassic Coast on the doorstep. Honiton, about seven miles, is a market town on an old Roman road with a history back to medieval times, still celebrating its Hot Pennies ceremony and Charter Day each July; it is known for lace and pottery, has many independent shops, restaurants, cafes and antique shops, and the former home of the painter Thelma Hulbert is now a public art gallery. Exeter is twenty miles, and Beer, the Donkey Sanctuary, Pecorama, RHS Rosemoor, Dartmoor and Exmoor are all within range.
