About Rower Fort

Rower Fort is genuinely unlike anything else you will find in the Devon countryside: a traditional farmhouse joined to a whimsical folly tower complete with battlements, originally built in 1827 and since extensively restored. It sleeps sixteen in eight bedrooms with five bathrooms, stands in twelve acres of private grounds near Stockland east of Honiton, holds a Gold award and takes three dogs.

The two things guests remember are both about water. A hot tub sits on the rooftop of the folly tower, which gives you panoramic views by day and an uninterrupted sky at night, and a Moroccan-inspired indoor swimming pool has been added below. Between them they turn a large group holiday into something else entirely.

Inside there are spacious living areas alongside the eight bedrooms, and the accommodation is all ground floor and level, with grab rails by the toilet, which makes the house workable for a mixed-ability group. There is a welcome pack, cot and high chair, wifi, a dishwasher, washing machine and freezer, and an open fire.

Outside, the grounds run to twelve acres of private land with a garden, patio, barbecue, a trampoline and parking for twelve cars, and the views take in fields, farmland, woodland and, on a clear day, the sea. The setting is secluded and remote, but Honiton has the nearest station and the A30 is two miles away. There is a gastro pub within a thirty-minute walk in the nearby village of Stockland, and further afield River Cottage HQ near Axminster, the Holt in Honiton, the Anchor at Beer and the Mason's Arms at Branscombe are all worth booking. The Blackdown Hills and East Devon National Landscapes are on the doorstep, the Jurassic Coast and Lyme Regis are close, and Exeter is about twenty miles. The house suits family holidays, reunions, weddings and milestone celebrations, and the owners take stag, hen and birthday parties.
