Cefn Y Waun is a stone cottage at the foot of the Black Mountains near Velindre in Powys, set within two hundred acres of private woodland that guests are free to explore. It sleeps six in three bedrooms and holds a Gold award. The position is remote and secluded, inside the Bannau Brycheiniog, or Brecon Beacons, National Park, with spectacular views from every window over mountains, woodland, fields and open country. It is a genuine cottage in the woods rather than a house with trees nearby, and the sense of having the place to yourself is the point of coming.
Inside, the original character has been kept: flagstone floors, exposed beams and a log burning stove in the sitting room, with a comfortable dining room seating six and a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, microwave, freezer and washing machine. Sky television is provided. The three bedrooms hold a king size bed, a double and two singles, with two bathrooms between them including en suite facilities, and towels, bed linen and a welcome pack are all included, along with a cot and high chair. The heating and the wood burner mean the cottage works as well in the depths of winter as in summer, which in this part of Wales is worth knowing.
Outside, the private enclosed garden has a patio, a barbecue and a fire pit, and there is an outdoor hot tub, for which a small additional charge applies. The location is dark sky friendly and the woodland around the cottage is quiet enough that stargazing is a real event rather than a claim. Ample free private parking is provided on a secure private driveway adjacent to the cottage. Up to two dogs are welcome, and there is a dog friendly pub in the nearby village. Short breaks are available in low and mid season.
Felindre is a small hamlet with a local pub, and the nearby towns of Hay on Wye and Talgarth, five miles off, provide more comprehensive facilities; the Three Tuns and the River Cafe are both worth knowing about. Hay, of course, means bookshops and the festival. The Black Mountains rise directly behind the cottage and the wider national park offers walking and hiking of every grade, along with mountain biking, cycling, pony trekking and horse riding. Brecon, with its cathedral and the mountain railway nearby, is an easy drive, and the rivers give canoeing, kayaking, fly and river fishing and angling. Bird watching and wildlife watching are effectively continuous here. Hereford is the nearest main line station, thirty miles away. For anyone who wants to be properly among trees and hills, with a hot tub and a log fire at the end of the day, this is an unusually appealing find.
