Ryton Grange is a Grade II listed farmhouse with two converted barns, standing in the small Shropshire village of Ryton midway between Shrewsbury and Church Stretton. Taken together the three buildings sleep twenty three, which makes this one of the larger group properties in the county and a practical answer to the problem of getting an extended family or a group of friends under one roof. The house retains a great deal of its early character, with exposed beams, panelling and floors that are honestly described as wobbly, set against modern comforts including underfloor heating, wood burners and Egyptian cotton linen. It holds a Gold award and is surrounded by working fields with views towards the Shropshire Hills.
The main house sleeps twelve in six bedrooms: four doubles, a room with three single beds and a single room, with one en suite double on the ground floor. There is a large lounge with a log burner, a snug with an open fire, and a utility with washing machine and dryer. Upstairs are three double bedrooms, the triple and the single, served by a family bathroom, a shower room and a separate WC. The kitchen is well equipped with a range cooker, and the table seats all twenty three so the whole party can eat together. The first barn sleeps six in three double bedrooms on the lower floor, with a large kitchen, dining and living space above fitted with a cinema speaker system. The Church Barn sleeps five, with one private double and a mezzanine holding a double and a single; the mezzanine is open, with no door.
Outside there is a large drive with additional parking to the side, space for six cars in total, and a well kept cottage garden that is fully enclosed. A separate games barn, cheerfully rustic rather than polished, has table tennis, a pool table and table football. There is outdoor seating and a barbecue on the patio, and board games indoors for quieter evenings. Wifi, digital television, a dishwasher, tumble dryer, microwave, freezer and coffee maker are all provided, along with towels, bed linen and a welcome pack. Cot, high chair and stairgate are available. One dog is welcome by prior arrangement. Groceries can be delivered to the property, and caterers or chefs can be hired locally, which is worth knowing when catering for this many people; short breaks are offered all year round, midweek and at weekends.
The village itself is quiet and rural, with a country pub, The Fox, roughly five minutes' walk away. Shrewsbury lies six miles off and is the nearest station eight miles away, with Church Stretton in the other direction and Ludlow, known for its food, within driving range. Days out include Attingham Park, Wroxeter Roman City, Ironbridge, Chirk Castle, Buildwas Abbey, Wenlock Priory, Shrewsbury Castle and the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre. The Shropshire Hills, the Long Mynd and Wenlock Edge offer walking, cycling, running, mountain biking and horse riding, with wild swimming at Carding Mill and gliders to watch from the hilltop; canoes and paddleboards can be hired in Shrewsbury. The Shrewsbury Flower Show and Folk Festival both fall in August.
