About Cholwell Hall
Cholwell Hall is an elegant country house in a fine Mendip setting midway between Bath, Wells and Bristol, roughly ten miles from each. It has ten bedrooms and six bathrooms and takes groups of fifteen to twenty-four, with a maximum of twenty-nine, for a whole-house weekend party. Parts of it date from the sixteenth century, with a good deal of Victorian work and period decoration alongside.
The scale of the rooms is what makes it work for a large gathering. There is an enormous traditional kitchen, a stately dining room seating up to thirty-two, and a separate function room built for a proper celebration, plus a games room with a pool table, table tennis and table football, and a piano. Exposed beams, open fires and a wood-burning stove run through, and there is wifi, digital television, a dishwasher, microwave and freezer.
The ten bedrooms are comfortable rather than showy, with some en-suite facilities, and the bed configuration is flexible with doubles, a large number of singles, bunks and Z beds to fit different party shapes. A cot, high chair and bed linen are provided.
Outside is a private garden with a barbecue and free off-road parking adjacent to the house, and views across fields, farmland and the valley. Catering is entirely up to you: take the house self-catering, or bring in caterers on your own terms, and the owners can supply contacts along with ideas for activities and entertainment. Stays run from a two-night weekend to a long weekend or a full week. A pub sits in the nearby village. Bath, ten miles off with the nearest station at Bath Spa, has the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent; Wells and its cathedral, Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole, Chew Valley Lake, Tyntesfield, the Mendip Hills, Longleat and Stonehenge are all within reach, along with boating, sailing, golf and horse riding locally. The house takes family gatherings, reunions, birthdays, weddings and stag or hen groups.
