Lower Hedge Farm is a Grade II listed fifteenth-century farmhouse at the end of a secluded lane near Shepton Mallet in Somerset, surrounded by unspoilt countryside where the only neighbours are the owners' sheep. It sleeps twelve in five bedrooms with four bathrooms, or up to fourteen using two Z beds, and takes two dogs. There is an eight-seater private hot tub and a games room.
The house was renovated over six years, restoring the wooden beams, inglenook fireplaces, an ancient bread oven and the enormous flagstones, and then bringing the standard up to modern comfort without losing them. The best of the new work is the sun room: high beamed ceilings, hanging chandeliers, a huge open fireplace, leather sofas, a 42-inch television and underfloor heating. Alongside it is a classic lounge with an inglenook fireplace and a woodburner for long winter evenings, and a bespoke designer kitchen and diner with granite worktops, an Aga and a three-oven electric range, with a dining area built for celebrating something.
Upstairs is beamed throughout. There is a king-size room, two doubles, a twin, and a long attic bedroom with four single beds; three of the five have en-suite facilities and two share access. Each was designed individually to match the style of the house, and all come with white towels and toiletries. A games room holds table tennis, a pool table and a Nintendo Wii.
Outside are beautiful gardens with a patio and an outdoor dining area, a barbecue for summer, and next to it the eight-seater hot tub. There is a play area for children, a secure private garden and parking. A cot, high chair and welcome pack are provided. The setting is remote and quiet, with walking straight from the door and golf and horse riding nearby. Castle Cary has the nearest station and Bath is about twenty-five miles away. Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor, Cheddar Gorge, Longleat and Cranborne Chase are all within reach. The house suits family reunions, milestone birthdays, anniversaries and weddings, and the owners take hen parties and birthday celebrations.
