About Portman House
Portman House is an elegant Georgian farmhouse in an elevated position down a quiet dead-end lane at Pylle in Somerset. It sleeps fourteen in six bedrooms with six bathrooms, holds a Gold award and takes up to two well-behaved dogs. What sets it apart from other houses of this size is what is underneath it: the cellar holds a bar with mood lighting, karaoke, a cinema room with a projector and a seven-seater sauna.
Above ground, the accommodation is airy and opulent, and the owners have combined the historic character with modern comfort successfully; guests tend to comment on the high Georgian ceilings and the large windows that make the most of the country setting. There is a sociable drawing room with four comfortable sofas, a television and an open fireplace, a separate dining room with a round table seating fourteen, a cosy snug with a woodburner, a well-equipped kitchen diner and a games room with a pool table, darts and table tennis.
The bedrooms are all spacious: a master with a six-foot super-king bed, two with luxury king-size beds and three twins, plus two Z beds for flexibility. The bathrooms feature roll-top baths and walk-in showers. A cot, high chair and welcome pack are provided along with towels and bed linen.
Outside, the terrace is a good spot for a group meal with a charcoal barbecue provided, and the private hot tub on the raised patio is available all year with the country views in front of it. The grounds are large and enclosed, with a private driveway and parking for six or more cars. A local farm shop is half a mile away and there are country pubs nearby, with the Natterjack Inn at Evercreech, the Red Lion at Babcary, the Pony and Trap at Chew Magna and the Sheppey at Godney all worth the drive. Castle Cary has the nearest station and Bath is twenty-two miles. Wells is about eight and a half miles, with the Mendip Hills close by, and Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole and the Shepton Mallet showground all within reach. The owners take hen parties.
