Lydeard Farm Bush Camp and Lodges is exclusive group accommodation in its own hidden valley in the Quantock Hills of Somerset, taking parties of between eight and fifty six guests across five lodges. It holds a Gold award. The proposition is different from a conventional holiday cottage: this is a place built for groups, celebrations and activity breaks, rustic rather than polished, with the emphasis on space, the outdoors and the freedom to make your own arrangements. Extra capacity is available through camping, and the site suits families, school residentials, church groups, clubs, sports tours, retreats and celebrations including stag and hen parties.
At the heart of the site is the indoor Bush Camp Shelter, with a fully equipped kitchen, a log burner and a dining area seating up to fifty. Guests can self cater or take a catered option, which removes a good deal of the logistical difficulty of feeding a large group. The lodges provide thirteen bedrooms and five bathrooms between them, single storey and straightforward, with a microwave, freezer and an open fire as well as the wood burner in the shelter. Bookings are exclusive, so the valley belongs to your group for the duration, which matters when the party is large or the occasion is a particular one.
One thing to be clear about before booking: this is deliberately off grid. There is no wifi and very little mobile reception, though some networks reach the top of the hill. For a good many groups that is the attraction rather than a drawback, particularly with children or teenagers in the party. Outside there is extensive space to relax, a private garden with furniture, an outdoor barbecue and a camp fire, and the site is dark sky friendly with a designated stargazing area and giant Jenga for the evenings. Archery and air rifles are available on site for activity breaks, and ample free private parking is provided. Views run out over fields, farmland, lake, woodland and open countryside. Short breaks are available all year round.
The Quantock Hills National Landscape surrounds the valley and is excellent walking, hiking and mountain biking country, with cycling, archery and paddle boarding locally and the coast within reach. Taunton is five miles away, with the station the same distance, and the M5 is about twenty minutes off at junction 24 from the north or 25 from the south. A pub, shops, a supermarket and further restaurants and cafes lie within five miles. For days out there are Hestercombe Gardens, Dunster Castle, the Somerset Rural Life Museum, Exmoor National Park and the South West Coast Path, with Bridgwater Carnival and the Somerset County Show marking the local year. If your group wants somewhere genuinely private, genuinely rural and set up to handle numbers, this is an unusual and useful find.
