Norton Cottage is a barn conversion set in the grounds of an Exmoor farm at Hawkridge, on the southern side of Exmoor National Park near the Somerset and North Devon border, looking out over Anstey Common and Molland Moor. It sleeps four in two bedrooms, both en-suite, holds a five-star rating and takes two dogs for a supplement. It has its own access to a hot tub and sweeping views of Exmoor.
The layout is upside down, with the living accommodation on the first floor to make the most of the view: an open-plan area with a cosy wood burner, comfortable sofas, a dining area and a well-equipped kitchen. Both bedrooms are on the ground floor, a king-size and a twin, each with en-suite facilities for privacy, along with a ground-floor cloakroom. A cot, high chair and stairgate are available on request, wifi is provided, heating and electricity are included, and so are bed linen and towels.
Outside is a patio with a picnic bench and barbecue, a good spot for sitting out with the views, plus a shared garden and access to the hot tub. Children have a play area with a climbing frame and a Wendy House, and stabling is available for horses, which makes the cottage a rare option for a riding holiday. Parking is ample.
Tarr Steps is a short hop away and worth a day, with a decent pub nearby. Dulverton, about five miles or fifteen minutes' drive, sits on the banks of the River Barle and is the southern gateway to Exmoor and home to the National Park headquarters, with a post office, butcher, bakery, fish and chip shop, greengrocer, late-opening supermarket, art gallery, boutiques, gift shops, restaurants, tea rooms and pubs. Withypool, also about five miles, has a village shop, tea rooms and a pub serving evening meals, and South Molton, twelve miles off, has a historic Pannier Market and a livestock market on Thursdays and Saturdays. The Chains, the Tarka Trail, the North Devon coast path, Woody Bay, the Valley of the Rocks, Lynton and Lynmouth are all within reach, the beaches at Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe are under an hour, and Knightshayes, Dunster Castle and Arlington Court are the nearby National Trust properties. Tiverton is seventeen miles.
