The Victorian Wing at Stockham Farm is a spacious wing of a traditional period farmhouse less than a mile and a half above the small market town of Dulverton, inside Exmoor National Park. It sleeps four in two bedrooms, holds a five-star rating with a Gold award, and it is set up unusually well for animals: two dogs and two cats are welcome for a charge, and stabling is available for horses by arrangement.
The sitting room has a woodburner set in an inglenook fireplace, comfortable sofas, a smart television and a supply of board games, and a complimentary basket of logs, kindling, firelighters and matches is left ready. The kitchen and breakfast room looks out over the orchard and has a ceramic hob, fan-assisted oven, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine. Underfloor heating warms the ground floor and radiators the upstairs.
Both bedrooms are on the first floor, one with a king-size double and one a spacious super-king that can be configured as twins on request, and both look out over paddocks and rolling hills. The family bathroom has a power shower over the bath. A cot and high chair are available, and bed linen and towels are provided, though it is worth bringing your own for day trips and the dog. A welcome pack waits on arrival with sparkling wine, home-made scones, Cornish clotted cream, local jam, milk, tea, coffee, sugar and olive oil.
Outside is a private lawned garden for guests' own use with furniture and a barbecue; it is private but not enclosed. Parking takes three or more cars on the driveway, and there is a metered electric vehicle charging point. Horses and ponies can be kept either on DIY livery in stone-built stables just across the garden or turned out in fenced paddocks, with hay and straw included; note that puppies under twelve months cannot be accommodated. The farm covers around thirty-five acres with horses, Exmoor Horn sheep and a good deal of wildlife including red deer. Walks lead straight from the door through fields and woodland, including a full day's trek to Tarr Steps and a circular route down into Dulverton, where the dog-friendly pubs welcome both of you. Dulverton, the southern gateway to Exmoor, has a Co-op, a delicatessen, butcher, baker, greengrocer, tea rooms, a rare bookshop, and both Woods Bar and Restaurant and the Bridge Inn; All Saints Church is worth a look for its carpet of snowdrops in early spring. Dunster Castle is within reach and Tiverton is sixteen miles.
