Chapel Cottage is a small stone built cottage for two in the market town of Saxmundham in Suffolk, tucked away beside a picturesque historic chapel. It is rated four stars with a Gold award. With one snug bedroom and a compact footprint it works beautifully as a romantic bolthole, and equally well for a solo traveller wanting a quiet base on the Suffolk coast. Exposed beams, period decoration and eighteenth century Georgian character give the interior real warmth. One small dog may be welcome by prior arrangement, and there are dog friendly walks and a dog friendly pub within fifteen minutes on foot.
The ground floor living space has a comfortable two seater sofa and a smart flatscreen television, with a bright dining area alongside where you can sit and watch the town go about its day. The kitchen is small but properly equipped, with an electric oven and grill, a gas hob, a small fridge freezer, a microwave, toaster, kettle and a Tassimo coffee machine. Upstairs the bedroom takes a cosy four foot double bed beneath a striking vaulted ceiling, with an elegant grey chandelier overhead, a television in the room, cotton rich linens and hypoallergenic duvet and pillows. The bathroom keeps the coastal theme with starfish detail tiles, and has a bath with a shower over and a WC. Wifi, towels, bed linen and a welcome pack are all included, along with board games, card games and a selection of books.
Outside there is a patio, and free parking is available with on street parking usually to be had nearby. Short breaks run all year round, which makes this a practical choice for a midweek escape as well as a full week. Saxmundham itself is the hub of the Suffolk Coastal region and a sensible touring base, a historic market town on the old coaching route to London where most of the shops and houses are Georgian or Victorian. There are restaurants, cafes and pubs, two art galleries, a local history museum, town trails and a street market on Wednesdays, with shops and a supermarket within a mile and the station in town.
The coast is the main event. The Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Landscape begins nearby, with flowering heather, shingle beaches and wide skies; Aldeburgh, with its pebble beach and concert hall connections, is less than ten miles away, and Southwold with its pier and golden sands about fifteen. RSPB Minsmere, Dunwich Heath, Walberswick, Orford Castle and Orford Ness, Snape Maltings, Framlingham Castle, Sutton Hoo, Rendlesham Forest and the Adnams Distillery are all within range, with Flatford Mill and Dedham Vale for Constable country. Walking, cycling, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, sea and river fishing, bird watching, beachcombing, horse riding, golf, archery and clay pigeon shooting are all available locally, and the year is punctuated by Latitude, FolkEast, the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival, Southwold Arts Festival and the Suffolk Show.
Additional charges: No additional cleaning fees.
