An Cala is a three bedroom cottage in the village of Connel in Argyll, sleeping six and holding a Gold award. It sits at the mouth of Loch Etive where the loch meets the sea and creates the famous Falls of Lora rapids, only yards from the water. The view is the making of it: the Inner Hebrides laid out in front of the house, straight across the Firth of Lorn to Mull and Lismore with the mountains beyond. The living room is framed by a large, low silled window that brings all of that right up to the reclining armchairs, and otters and seals are regular visitors among the moored boats.
The living room has a large wood burning stove and reclining Norwegian leather chairs, with an open plan dining area alongside seating six, ideally placed for a meal as the sun goes down over the islands. To the rear is the fully equipped kitchen and a conservatory, which gives an additional breakfast dining area, and underfloor heating runs throughout. The three bedrooms hold a king size bed, a double and two singles, with one bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor and two bathrooms in total. Wifi, digital television, a dishwasher, microwave, freezer, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, washing machine and tumble dryer are all provided, along with towels, bed linen, a welcome pack, a high chair, board games and a selection of books. The cottage is decorated for Christmas.
The enclosed private garden is reached from the kitchen and has a patio, garden furniture, an outdoor bench and a barbecue, well suited to eating outside on a fine evening. Parking for three cars is provided off road on a private driveway. Up to two dogs are welcome, with dog friendly walks and a dog friendly pub both within a fifteen minute walk, and short breaks are available in low season. If you would rather not cook, there is an excellent gastro pub and restaurant two minutes' walk away, with more eating out within a mile and a shop and supermarket within five miles.
Connel Ferry station is a mile away, and Oban, the Gateway to the Isles, is six miles off with its ferries, distillery, McCaig's Tower and seafood. From there the islands open up: Mull, Iona and its abbey, Staffa and Fingal's Cave, and Lismore with its lighthouse. Closer to hand are Ardchattan Priory Garden, Castle Stalker, Kilchurn Castle, Cruachan Power Station and the Hollow Mountain visitor centre, with Inveraray's castle, jail and maritime museum, Loch Fyne Oysters and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park all within range. Sailing, yachting, sea fishing, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, wind surfing, boating, swimming, beachcombing, climbing, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, golf, bird watching and stargazing are all available locally. For a cottage where the view does most of the work, this is a fine example.
