Malabar Chalet is a two bedroom lodge beside Loch Caolisport on the Ellary Estate in Argyll, sleeping four and holding a Gold award. It is the largest of the Ellary cottages and offers generous living space for a relaxed waterside break, with lochside views from the living room and the deck that make getting up early worthwhile. The setting is remote and secluded in South Knapdale, a quiet and infrequently visited part of the west coast, with hills, woodland, beach and loch all in view. Up to two dogs are welcome by prior arrangement.
The lodge has two comfortable bedrooms, a double suited to a couple and a twin for family or friends, and a spacious contemporary shower room with a large cubicle, washbasin and WC. The living room has comfortable seating and panoramic views over the water, and a door leads straight out to the private deck. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped, with a microwave, freezer, kettle, toaster and washing machine, making it easy to put together a hearty breakfast or an unhurried dinner, and there is a dining table for four. Digital television and a welcome pack are provided. Please note that the Malabar is available from March through to October, and that short breaks are not offered here.
The private decking is furnished and looks out uninterrupted across the shimmering water of Loch Caolisport, with a barbecue for cooking outside on a fine evening. Free private parking for two cars sits adjacent to the lodge on a private driveway. This is a place for outdoor enthusiasts: the estate has a harbour where guests can moor a boat, sailing is popular along this coast, and there is a practice golf course near the main house open for guests to use. Wild swimming is part of the appeal for those who fancy it.
Set near the mouth of Lochead Burn, the lodge suits anglers, who can buy trout fishing permits directly from the estate office. Nature lovers will spot deer and birds of prey including buzzards, and a network of scenic walking trails crosses the estate, some leading up to the historic Castle Sween. Further afield lie Kilmartin Glen and its museum, one of the richest prehistoric landscapes in Scotland, the hillfort at Dunadd, Tarbert Castle, Crarae Garden, the Auchindrain Township, Inveraray with its castle, jail and maritime museum, Loch Fyne Oysters, Oban Distillery, McCaig's Tower, Cruachan Power Station, Gigha and the Mull of Kintyre. Sea and river fishing, kayaking, canoeing, boating, paddle boarding, sailing, rockpooling, beachcombing, swimming, hiking, cycling, pony trekking, tennis, golf, bird watching and wildlife watching are all available locally. Restaurants, pubs, cafes, a shop and a supermarket are within fifteen miles, and Glasgow is a hundred, which tells you most of what you need to know about the peace and quiet.
