About The Turbine House

The Turbine House is a one bedroom cottage on the Ellary Estate in South Knapdale, Argyll, converted from the building that once generated the estate's electricity. It sleeps two, is arranged on a single level and holds a Gold award. The setting is remote and secluded, between Loch Sween and Loch Caolisport on the west coast, with views over garden, woodland, open country and the sea. This is an infrequently visited part of Argyll and one of the loveliest, a landscape of rocky outcrops, hidden inlets, sandy beaches and scattered islands, and the appeal of the cottage is inseparable from it.

Inside, the layout is open plan, with the sitting room, kitchen and dining area in one space and a table for three. The kitchen is fully fitted with a fridge freezer, microwave and washing machine, and there is a coffee maker. The bathroom has no bath but a large walk in shower, and underfloor heating runs throughout the cottage, which gives it a genuinely cosy feel whatever the weather outside is doing, and this being the west coast of Scotland, that matters. Bed linen and a welcome pack are provided. Everything is on one floor, which suits guests who prefer to avoid stairs.

Decking along one side of the cottage provides the outdoor space, well placed for alfresco dining, an evening drink or simply sitting with the view and the birds. There is a barbecue, and parking for one car. Up to two dogs are welcome. Short breaks are not generally available, though three night stays from Friday to Monday and four night stays from Monday to Friday are now offered here, which makes this small cottage easier to fit into a trip than many on the estate.

Walking is the main occupation. There are fine walks from the door and it is well worth venturing further: Corrbhan Mor, the highest point of the Ellary and Castle Sween estates, gives views you will not forget. Lochead Burn nearby is popular with anglers for salmon and sea trout, though a permit is required. Lussa Falls and Tarbert Castle are close, and Castle Sween sits on the shore of its own loch. Cycling, mountain biking, golf, angling, sea and river fishing, beachcombing, bird watching and wildlife watching are all available locally, and wild swimming is part of the attraction for the hardy. Lochgilphead, the heart of Mid Argyll, is the nearest town of any size and an excellent base for exploring the area. Whether you come to walk, to fish, to photograph the coast or simply to sit still somewhere very quiet, the Turbine House does the job.
