Lochead Cottage sits in a very quiet part of South Knapdale on the Ellary Estate in Argyll, close to the head of Loch Caolisport, sleeping six in three bedrooms with two bathrooms and a Gold award. This is an infrequently visited corner of the west coast and one of the loveliest, with hills, woodland, loch and beach in view and very little else. Regular visitors tend to talk about the same things: the freedom, the peace and quiet, and the friendly atmosphere of the estate. It is genuinely remote and secluded, which is the point, and it suits families interested in walking, fishing and boating rather than anyone looking for nightlife.
The cottage has a living room with an open fire, a kitchen and a bathroom with a bath and shower. One bedroom is on the ground floor with a double bed, and the two upstairs bedrooms each have twin beds, which makes the layout straightforward for a family or two couples. A dining table seats six. Wifi, Sky TV, a washing machine, microwave, freezer and coffee maker are provided along with a welcome pack, and the cottage is cosy rather than grand, in keeping with its setting. Several other cottages on the estate are also available, all with good views of the sea.
Outside there is a private enclosed garden with a patio and a barbecue, and a river or stream running through the garden, which children tend to find more interesting than anything indoors. The setting is hillside and rural, close to the sea, with wild swimming possible nearby for the hardy. Free parking for three cars sits adjacent to the cottage on a private driveway. Up to two dogs are welcome. Please note that short breaks are not available here, so bookings are for full weeks.
This stretch of Argyll is quietly extraordinary. Kilmartin Glen, one of the richest prehistoric landscapes in Scotland, is nearby with its museum, standing stones and the hillfort at Dunadd, ancient seat of the kings of Dal Riata. Castle Sween sits on the shore of Loch Sween, and Tarbert Castle guards its harbour to the south. Inveraray, with its castle, jail and maritime museum, Crarae Garden, the Auchindrain Township and Loch Fyne Oysters are all within reach, as are Cruachan Power Station, Oban Distillery and McCaig's Tower, with Gigha and the Mull of Kintyre further afield. Sailing, sea and river fishing, angling, boating, paddle boarding, rockpooling, beachcombing, swimming, hiking, cycling, pony trekking, golf, tennis, bird watching and wildlife watching are all available locally. Glasgow is about a hundred miles away, which gives a fair idea of how far from the ordinary this is.
