Orchard Hideaway is a two-bedroom chalet on an organic farm in the Scottish Borders, one of three lodges on the same holding and set apart enough to feel secluded. It sleeps four, holds a four-star rating with a Gold award, and looks out across the valley towards the Cheviot Hills. Kelso is about four miles away.
Inside, full-length windows in some rooms keep the whole lodge light and airy. The living area is open plan, with plenty of comfortable seating, a wood-burning stove and a flat-screen television, and the kitchen behind it has a dishwasher, microwave, freezer and coffee maker. There are two bedrooms, a double with a king-size bed and a twin, and one good family bathroom between them. A high chair is available, and there is a laundry room on site.
The lodge's own attraction is outside: a log-fired hot tub on the decking, which takes a while to heat and rewards the wait. The decked area itself is a decent spot for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine with the valley and river in front of you, and there is a barbecue for cooking out. Guests also have use of a tennis court shared across the farm.
Kelso is a market town worth the short drive, with a cobbled market square, independent shops, a wine bar, Floors Castle and Kelso Abbey, and walks along the banks of the Tweed. Abbotsford House and Mellerstain House and Gardens are both close, and the local calendar takes in the Melrose Sevens, Kelso Races and the Border Union Show. There is a pub within five miles, with the Cobbles Inn, the Contented Vine, Lemon and Thyme and the Waggon Inn all recommended locally. Edinburgh is around forty miles off, and Tweedbank and Berwick-upon-Tweed have the nearest stations. Fishing, cycling, horse riding, golf and walking are all available nearby.
