Plas Glansevin is an impressive Grade II* listed Georgian mansion in the Towy Valley at the western foothills of the Bannau Brycheiniog, or Brecon Beacons, National Park, set in over five acres of private grounds near Llangadog in Carmarthenshire. It holds a Gold award. Built during the Napoleonic wars as a family home, it is now into its third century as a residence, and from the sixteenth century until after the Second World War it was the seat of one of the oldest surviving families in Wales, with both lines of Celtic and royal descent and connections back to Edward I and Tudur Mawr. The oldest part of the house, bedroom eleven and the sitting room below it, was known as the Tudor House.
An expansive hallway opens to a large games room on one side and a spacious, elegant drawing room on the other, the latter with an open coal fire and a bar. Three further smaller reception rooms along from the hall have televisions and projector screens. The dining room seats seventy to eighty people beneath an inglenook fireplace, and there is a fully equipped kitchen looking into it plus an additional preparation kitchen nearby, which is the sort of arrangement that makes catering for a big party realistic. The games room has table tennis, a pool table and table football. There are twenty bedrooms in the house sleeping forty two guests, ranging from large rooms with en suite bathrooms to more modest accommodation, and for larger parties the Carriage Rooms next door add eight further en suite doubles, taking the total capacity considerably higher.
The large grounds are a fine place for games or for sitting in the sun, with a private garden, patio, barbecue, fire pit and an open air unheated swimming pool, plus a sauna. You can walk straight out into the countryside from the gardens. Accessibility has been considered, with an access ramp, wide doorways and grab rails. Ample private parking is provided along with an electric car charging point, and wifi, a dishwasher, microwave, freezer, washing machine, towels, bed linen, a welcome pack, a cot and a high chair are all included. Up to three dogs are welcome, short breaks are offered in low and mid season, and stag, hen, birthday, wedding and corporate groups are all accommodated; the owners can put you in touch with local caterers, wedding planners, activity providers and professional walk leaders.
A pub is within a fifteen minute walk, and Llangadog station is two miles away with Carmarthen twenty two. Beyond the garden wall lie the mountains of the national park, with castles, waterfalls, rivers and lakes to discover, and walking of every grade. Llandeilo, with its independent shops and eating places, is close, and Carmarthen has its castle and famous market. A deer park, botanical gardens and art galleries are all within a short drive. Canoeing, caving, climbing, hiking, horse riding, tennis, swimming, golf and stargazing are available locally. For a large group wanting a real country house with genuine history, in walking country, this is an unusually generous option.
