Ty Penbryn is a Georgian style mansion just outside Carmarthen in West Wales, reopened in 2025 after extensive renovation and sleeping up to twenty four across eleven bedrooms. It holds a Gold award. Built in the early nineteenth century and once the home of the Welsh poet Sir Lewis Morris, the house stands in one point eight acres of landscaped gardens with panoramic views over the Lower Towy Valley. What sets it apart is the dedicated leisure wing: an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room, a jacuzzi, a cinema room and a games room, all under the same roof as the bedrooms, which makes weather largely irrelevant to the success of a stay.
Nine bedrooms are in the main house with two more in an adapted ground floor annexe. The Georgian wing has the Kingfisher and Stripes suites, both with super king beds, sofas and en suites, the latter with a dressing room and both bath and shower; the Gold Room, Fountain View and Pearl Room all have king beds and en suite showers. The Victorian wing, its rooms named after the waterfalls of the Brecon Beacons, holds two twin rooms, a room with two double beds and a room with a double and a single, each with an en suite shower over bath. The annexe, named after two local rivers, has a double and a single room, a shower with grab handles and a built in seat, a living area with a sofa, television, table and chairs, and a small kitchen with an air fryer, mini fridge freezer, sink, microwave, toaster and kettle.
The ground floor of the main house has a family style kitchen with a dishwasher, coffee machine, microwave and oven, a second smaller kitchen with a range cooker, air fryer, slow cooker and cookware for large numbers, a dining room seating twenty four, and a drying room with a large sink, pulley rack and two washer dryer sets, useful after a day in the sea. There is a games room with poker, chess and board games, a music room with a harp, ukulele, drum kit, record player and piano, a billiard room with a pool table, and an entrance hall fitted with a jukebox, karaoke system and disco ball. The second floor has a cinema room with a hundred inch smart TV and bean bag seating, and an office with two screens. The leisure wing's pool is twelve metres by six and four feet deep with a beach step for younger swimmers, alongside heated loungers, a four person sauna and steam room, a six person jacuzzi, changing rooms, and an upstairs family area with a ping pong table, large TV and sofas.
Outside the gardens include a multi use games area suitable for pickleball or five a side football, and a pirate ship play area for children. Up to two dogs are welcome at additional charge, though strictly not in the leisure wing, on the first floor or on soft furnishings, and an EV charger is available for a fee. Carmarthen, with its castle and celebrated market, is close, and the Towy Valley is rich in places to go: Aberglasney, Dinefwr, Dryslwyn and Carreg Cennen castles, the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Gelli Aur Country Park, Talley Abbey, the Gwili Railway, Llandeilo, and the Dylan Thomas boathouse and trail at Laugharne. The coast gives Pendine Sands, Ferryside, Pembrey Country Park and the Millennium Coastal Park, while the Brecon Beacons, Brechfa Forest and Llyn Brianne lie inland for walking, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, pony trekking and kayaking. Short breaks are offered midweek and at weekends in low and mid season.
