2 Barlowenath Cottages is a Grade II listed character cottage in a tiny hamlet near Marazion in West Cornwall, sleeping four in two bedrooms with a Gold award. It forms the end of a pair of adjoining farmhouses standing right beside St Hilary Church, on a farm surrounded by fields that turn purple and gold with flowers and sunflowers in season. The setting is properly rural and quiet, with views over farmland and hills, and yet the coast is only a couple of miles away, which is an unusual and rather appealing combination in this part of Cornwall. One dog is welcome by prior arrangement.
Inside, the cottage is traditional and cosy, with exposed beams and the solidity of an old building. There is a lounge and dining area with ample comfortable seating, a dining table for four and a television, and a well equipped kitchen with a microwave, freezer, coffee maker, kettle and toaster. Wifi is provided. The two bedrooms hold a king size bed and a pair of single beds, and the family bathroom has a bath with shower and a WC. Towels, bed linen and a welcome pack are all included, along with a selection of books and board games for quieter evenings. A cot is available for the youngest guests.
The garden is private and enclosed, a lovely spot in summer with an outdoor bench and a barbecue, and from it there are distant views out to St Michael's Mount. The location is dark sky friendly, so clear nights are worth staying outside for. Parking is free, private, secure and off road, immediately adjacent to the cottage, with a designated space and a private driveway. A dog friendly pub and dog friendly walks are both within a fifteen minute walk, and there is a local shop and a supermarket within a mile. Short breaks are offered in low season only.
The position suits anyone wanting to see West Cornwall properly. St Michael's Mount and Marazion are within about three miles, with one of Cornwall's finest sandy beaches, country inns and small shops, and the boat trip across to the Mount and its subtropical gardens is worth making. Perranuthnoe Beach is roughly two miles off. Penzance is six miles, the fishing town of St Ives eight, and Land's End sixteen, with St Erth the nearest station at four miles. The South West Coast Path opens up Porthcurno, Sennen Cove, Mousehole, the Lizard and Kynance Cove, while further east lie the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Charlestown Harbour and Tintagel Castle. Golf, surfing, sailing, sea and fly fishing, coasteering, paddle boarding, climbing, horse riding, rockpooling and wildlife watching are all available locally, and the Royal Cornwall Show and Penzance Literary Festival are fixtures of the local calendar.
