Eyam is a two bedroom cottage at the Darwin Lake holiday village near Matlock in the Derbyshire Peak District, sleeping four and nestled by the lake with pleasant views across the water. It suits small families and couples travelling together, and anyone whose main requirement is peace and quiet will not be disappointed. The cottage is spacious for its size and has been put together as a home away from home rather than a functional base, with a modern open plan living space on the ground floor and two comfortable bedrooms above.
Downstairs, the living area is open plan and welcoming, with comfortable seating, a good quality television and DVD player, and a crafted dining table with wooden chairs seating four. The adjacent kitchen is very well appointed, with a modern electric oven and hob, a fridge freezer, a washer dryer and a microwave, so self catering for a few days takes no effort. There is also a downstairs WC, which is more useful than it sounds in a two bedroom cottage. Wifi is provided throughout.
Upstairs are two spacious bedrooms: a double with an en suite and a television, and a twin, served by a main bathroom with a shower over the bath. Bed linen is provided, and prices are inclusive of linen, towels and electricity. Parking is available at the cottage, and children are most welcome. The lakeside position is the quiet pleasure of the place, with water to look at from the windows and easy walking from the door into the surrounding countryside.
The wider area offers something for everyone, from attractions aimed at small children and teenagers to more sedate days out. Matlock has plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants alongside traditional pubs, with Ashbourne and Chesterfield within reach, and Bakewell rewards an afternoon with its quaint shopping arcades full of antique, curio and gift shops, not to mention the pudding. Attractions abound in the Peak District: steam railways, limestone caverns, outdoor activity centres, pony trekking, museums and stately homes, with amusement parks including Alton Towers and Gulliver's Kingdom for a family day. The national park is immediately at hand, with walking and cycling routes ranging from gentle valley strolls to longer days on the moorland edges, and Chatsworth and the Derwent Valley mills within easy driving distance.
