About Balebarn Eco Lodge
Balebarn Lodge sits beside a seven-acre nature reserve in the Devon countryside near Winkleigh, roughly midway between Dartmoor and Exmoor and about thirty-five minutes from the coast. It sleeps eight in four bedrooms with two bathrooms, holds a Gold award and takes two dogs. It is a green gold award winner with a range of energy-saving features and a genuinely unusual upcycled interior, which gives it a relaxed character you do not often find.
The open-plan living area combines a comfortable lounge with a woodburner, a dining area and a kitchen with two ovens, a microwave and a dishwasher, which makes self-catering for eight straightforward. There are four bedrooms, all with countryside views: a master double, a twin, a bunk room and a further single or double room, with two bathrooms, one with a bath and the other a walk-in shower and wet room. Wifi and digital television are provided along with a piano, a welcome pack, towels and bed linen. The lodge is all on one level with level access throughout, a ramp to the door, wide doorways and ground-floor bedrooms and bathrooms, which makes it a rare fully accessible option.
Outside is a fantastic wrap-around veranda where you can sit and take in the setting, with views over the wildlife pond, plus a private hot tub, a small lawn, a barbecue area, a fire pit and parking for three cars with an electric car charging point. The site is dark-sky friendly.
The nature reserve on site is the heart of the place: a wildlife pond you can take a paddle boat out on, or swim in if you are feeling adventurous, a smaller pond for fishing, an area for badminton, a children's play area with a swing and slide, a go-cart, outdoor chess, and pedal bikes free to use for exploring the country lanes. Winkleigh, two miles away, has two pubs, a post office, a mini-supermarket and a butcher, with the Kings Arms two miles off. Chulmleigh is five miles and Eggesford has the nearest station. Dartmoor is around thirty minutes, Exmoor about forty-five, and Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! a similar drive. The owners take hen parties.
