Rafters is a two bedroom cottage on the Dittiscombe Estate in the South Hams district of South Devon, sleeping four and holding a Gold award. The estate occupies a private conservation valley of some twenty acres of open space, woodland and meadow, which means a proper walk can be had straight from the cottage door without meeting a road. The building dates from the eighteenth century and keeps its original features, including the exposed beams that give the main bedroom its character. Views run out over hills, valley, woodland and garden. Two dogs are welcome, along with cats, and dog friendly walks start within fifteen minutes.
The cottage is welcoming and comfortably scaled. The lounge has sofas and a television, and the kitchen and dining area is light, airy and well equipped, with a microwave, freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer and a table seating four; there is a separate laundry room on site. Wifi and digital television are provided, along with bed linen and a welcome pack. The two bedrooms comprise a main room with a king size bed under wooden beams and a twin with single beds, and the bathroom is on the ground floor. A cot, high chair and stairgate are available, which makes this workable for a couple travelling with a small child as well as for two couples or a family of four.
Outside there is a private, level, fully enclosed garden with flowers and a stone wall, secure enough for dogs and children, with a patio, garden furniture and a barbecue so the summer can be spent largely outdoors. A stream runs through the garden. The estate has a bird watching area, a stargazing area and dark skies, and there is an outdoor dog washing station for muddy paws after a valley walk. Parking is free and private, in a car park with space for up to ten cars, and an electric car charging point is available. Short breaks are offered midweek and at weekends in low and mid season, and the wider estate has a nature trail through ponds and woods and a flat area suitable for ball games.
The valley sits between Dartmoor and the South Devon coast, with unspoilt beaches a short drive away. Historic Slapton village is about ten minutes off, behind the long sweep of Start Bay, where the South West Coast Path can be joined for the walk between Salcombe and Dartmouth past Start Point Lighthouse, Blackpool Sands and Torcross; the memorial tank at Torcross recalls the D-Day landing rehearsals here. The freshwater lagoon at Slapton Ley is nationally important for its wildlife, with a nature trail through the reedbeds. Dartmouth Castle, Greenway, Buckfast Abbey, Dartmoor National Park, Paignton Zoo, Pennywell Farm and Woodlands Family Theme Park all make good days out, with surfing at Bantham and Bigbury, kayak hire for the local creeks and estuaries, and steam trains at Totnes and Dartmouth. Kingsbridge is six miles away and Totnes is the nearest main rail connection.
