The Owlery is a romantic stone cottage for two in an idyllic valley on the Dittiscombe Estate in the South Hams, close to historic Slapton village and within a short drive of Dartmouth and Salcombe. It holds a Gold award, is allergy friendly and is a pet-free cottage. The estate is a conservation valley of over twenty acres of private open space with ponds, woodland and meadows.
Inside, the open-plan sitting, dining and kitchen area has wooden floors, a wood burner, a circular glass dining table with candles, a sofa and coffee tables, an electric oven and hob and a microwave, plus wifi and digital television. The bedroom is on a galleried mezzanine above, overlooking the sitting room, with a king-size bed. Steps down from the sitting room lead to a luxury bathroom with an oval air bath big enough for two, which delivers a genuinely relaxing aquamassage, and a separate shower cubicle. Oil-fired central heating runs through, and bath and hand towels, bed linen and a welcome pack are provided.
Outside, the garden overlooks a small pond and is partly gravelled and planted with seaside-loving species, with a separate paved area with patio furniture, raised shrub borders and climbing plants, sun loungers and a barbecue. A further private lawn looks up the valley into the orchard, which is an ideal spot for birdwatching, and there is a stargazing area, a nature trail across the estate, an electric car charging point and parking beside the cottage.
You can walk straight from the door to the beach in about fifty minutes, or pick up a more dramatic section of the South West Coast Path. Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve, a large freshwater lagoon, is a haven for birds and wildlife. The Tower Inn at Slapton is worth an evening, Torcross three miles away has coastal and Ley-side trails and the Memorial Tank telling the story of Operation Tiger, and a drive to Start Point lighthouse gives a spectacular coastal walk round to Great Mattiscombe Sands with seals and seabirds along the way; Hallsands and Beesands have the Cricket Inn for fresh fish. Dartmouth, on the banks of the Dart, has narrow ancient streets of boutiques, galleries and delicatessens, a cobbled market place, sailing, kayaking, Dartmouth Castle, the National Trust's Greenway and Coleton Fishacre, the steam train to Paignton, the Royal Naval College and a full calendar of festivals. Kingsbridge is six miles, Totnes has the nearest station and Dartmoor is about fifteen miles.
