The Dovecote is a barn conversion on the Dittiscombe Estate in the South Hams, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South Devon. It sleeps three in two bedrooms, holds a Gold award and takes two dogs and cats. The estate sits in a private conservation valley, about thirty minutes from Dartmoor and close to the coast.
Inside there is a beamed lounge with a woodburner and a television, a well-equipped kitchen with a microwave, freezer, coffee maker, washing machine and tumble dryer, and a dining area for four. The bedrooms are a king-size and a single, with a ground-floor family bathroom. Wifi and digital television run throughout, and a welcome pack, towels and bed linen are provided along with a cot, high chair and stairgate.
Outside is a gravel seating area for outdoor dining with a barbecue, steps up to a lawn with valley views, and a partly enclosed garden with access to the fields and orchard beyond. Parking is in a private car park, and there is an electric car charging point. The setting is dark-sky friendly with a stargazing area, a birdwatching area, a stream in the grounds and a Wendy house, and it is a fireworks-free location, which nervous dogs appreciate.
Guests have the run of a nature trail, play and picnic areas and around twenty acres of grounds with ponds and woods, which makes it a genuinely good place for a dog walk or a children's mini safari to identify local wildlife. For guests bringing a dog the owners supply copies of Toby's Dog Walks in South Devon, a bag of treats, biodegradable bags and a torch, with extra towels, throws, rugs, bowls, emergency dog food, toys, leads and collars available if needed. Historic Slapton, ten minutes' drive, sits behind the huge sweep of Start Bay, with the South West Coast Path linking Salcombe and Dartmouth by way of Start Point Lighthouse, East Prawle, Blackpool Sands and Torcross; the memorial tank at Torcross tells the story of the D-Day landing practices here. Slapton Ley, a freshwater lagoon of national scientific importance, has a nature trail around the reedbeds. Kingsbridge is six miles, Totnes has the nearest station, and Bigbury-on-Sea, Hope Cove, Greenway, Pennywell Farm and Woodlands Family Theme Park are all within range.
