Cheeseman's Cottage is a detached eighteenth century thatched cottage on a quiet country lane at Muckleford in Dorset, sleeping five in two bedrooms and surrounded by its own garden. It is the sort of chocolate box cottage that people picture when they imagine a Dorset holiday, and it sits within the Dorset National Landscape with views over fields, farmland, hills and garden. Muckleford is part of the parish of Bradford Peverell, five miles from Dorchester and seven from the coast, and it feels a world away from busy roads while remaining well placed for touring West Dorset. Up to three well behaved dogs are welcome, with a charge for the second and third.
The cottage is full of character, with exposed beams and a cosy inglenook fireplace fitted with a wood burning stove; a starter supply of logs is provided in the winter months. The lounge has a large flatscreen television and a DVD player, and there is a separate dining room seating six that opens out to the garden. The kitchen is well equipped for self catering, with an electric oven and induction hob, a microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. Upstairs are a king size bedroom and a family room with a double bed and an additional single, and the family bathroom has a WC, a bath and a separate shower. Central heating, wifi and towels are provided, and a travel cot without linen and a high chair are available; linen and towels are included in weekly and short break bookings.
Outside, the enclosed garden is mainly laid to grass with a good sized lawn, a patio and garden furniture, secure enough for children and dogs to be let loose in. Off road parking is available for two cars. Short breaks run all year round, and the cottage works as well for a winter weekend by the fire as for a summer week with the doors open. The lane is quiet, the surroundings are open farmland, and there are walks across the fields and along the River Frome with plenty of quiet spots for a picnic or a wander with the dogs.
Dorchester, five miles away, offers an appealing mix of independent shops, heritage sites and markets, and the seaside towns of Weymouth and Lyme Regis are easily reached for beach days and the Jurassic Coast. Abbotsbury, nearby, has the famous Swannery, the Subtropical Gardens and St Catherine's Chapel above Chesil Beach. Maiden Castle, Hardy's Cottage and the South West Coast Path are all within easy reach, as are Durdle Door, Weymouth Beach and the Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park. Walking, cycling, bird watching and wildlife watching are the obvious local pursuits. Whether you spend the week on the coast, walking through fields of wildflowers, or simply sitting still by the fire, this is an authentic and restful corner of Dorset.
