Snowdrop Cottage is a detached four bedroom holiday house on a private estate at Higher Bockhampton in Dorset, opposite Hardy's Cottage, rated five stars by VisitEngland with a Gold award. It manages the trick of feeling special enough for a celebration and relaxed enough for a week of doing very little: wooden floors, stylish interiors, a log burning stove, and an enclosed garden with a private hot tub, barbecue and outdoor seating. The estate sits at the edge of Thorncombe Woods where they merge into Puddletown Forest, with trails starting right outside the gate. One dog is welcome, and there is a secure exercise paddock on the estate for them.
The heart of the cottage is the open plan kitchen, dining and living area, designed around spending time together. The kitchen is fully equipped with a double oven, dishwasher, fridge freezer and washing machine, and the large dining table seats eight. Comfortable sofas are arranged around the log burner, with a smart TV, DVD player and superfast wifi for quieter evenings, and there is an office area with a desk. The main bedroom has a king size wrought iron bed, an en suite WC and a freestanding roll top bath looking out over the garden. A flexible twin room with zip and link beds has its own en suite shower room, a generous double bedroom includes a desk for remote working, and the fourth bedroom has a small double bunk with a single above, which suits children or teenagers. A family shower room and an additional cloakroom keep things civilised with a full house. Towels are provided, along with a cot.
Outside, the enclosed garden is the place to be, whether that means a soak in the hot tub, dinner outdoors or simply sitting out under the stars, which are worth looking at here. Shared estate facilities are extensive: tennis courts, badminton, croquet, boules, football goals, a games room with pool, table tennis and table football, children's play areas including a trampoline and wendy house, a nature trail and quiet green spaces. Fresh eggs and seasonal produce are available from the estate, there are small farm animals to meet, and additional communal hot tubs, a central laundry and a weekly events board round out the experience. Parking is provided with an electric car charging point, and short breaks run all year round.
The woodland paths beyond the gate are ancient ones, and they inspired a good deal of Thomas Hardy's writing; today they range from shaded short walks to longer rambles where you may see deer, wild ponies or the shine of a hidden pond. Dorchester, the county town, is within ten minutes' drive, with weekly markets, museums, independent shops and mainline trains to London and the south coast. The Jurassic Coast is equally close: Weymouth's sandy beach is eleven miles away, with Chesil Beach's dramatic shingle ridge, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door all within easy reach, and the Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park for a family day. Country pubs such as The Blue Vinny at Puddletown and The Wise Man at West Stafford serve hearty food nearby. Cycling, walking, tennis, croquet, boules, fishing, stargazing and wildlife watching are all on offer.
