About Kings House
Kings House is a detached two bedroom cottage in the village of Minterne Magna in Dorset, sleeping four and holding a Gold award. It stands opposite the Minterne Estate, which gives it a quiet, private position and an unusual set of privileges: complimentary access to the celebrated Minterne Gardens, and use of the estate's heated outdoor swimming pool and tennis court, a two minute walk away and available daily between one and three in the afternoon. The cottage itself combines contemporary comfort with traditional country character, and with a secure garden and an open fire it suits families and couples equally. Up to two well behaved dogs are welcome by prior arrangement, with a charge for the first.
The main lounge is built around an open fire, the natural place to end a day of walking with a book or a film. A second living space provides somewhere else to go, with comfortable seating, a television and a formal dining table, useful for family breakfasts, board games or an evening in. The kitchen is fully equipped for self catering, with a dishwasher and microwave among the fittings. Upstairs are two flexible bedrooms: one arranged as twins or, on request, as a super king thanks to zip and link beds, and the second usually presented as a super king but convertible to twins if you say so when booking. The first floor bathroom has a bath, a separate shower cubicle, a washbasin and WC. Central heating runs throughout, and a travel cot, high chair and travel stairgate are available, with linen and towels included in weekly and short break bookings.
Outside is a fully enclosed lawned garden of good size, secure for children and dogs, with outdoor furniture and a charcoal barbecue. Two off road parking spaces are provided. Short breaks are available all year round. The village setting is the appeal here: life moves at a gentler pace, and the pleasure of the place is as much in returning to it as in going out, lighting the fire, gathering round the table and letting the dogs stretch out on the lawn.
Minterne Gardens, included in the stay, were created over generations and enriched by Himalayan plant collecting, with tumbling waterfalls, tranquil lakes and one of the finest collections of rhododendrons and azaleas in the country; there is something worth seeing in every season, from spring bulbs to autumn colour. Cerne Abbas, two miles off, is one of Dorset's most photographed villages, with traditional country pubs and the famous giant carved into the hillside above. Sherborne, about ten miles away, has two historic castles and a magnificent abbey, and Dorchester, also around ten miles, offers independent shops, museums and Thomas Hardy connections along with mainline trains. The Jurassic Coast is roughly eighteen miles away, with Chesil Beach, Weymouth Beach and the Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park all within reach. Walking, cycling, nature walks and country pursuits fill out the rest.
