About Churchill House
Churchill House is a handsome former farmhouse on the historic Minterne Estate at Minterne Magna in Dorset, sleeping sixteen across eight bedrooms with five bathrooms and a Gold award. Approached by a private drive and surrounded by rolling chalk countryside, it takes its name from the Churchill family, who held Minterne before the estate passed to the Digbys in the eighteenth century. Two staircases wind through the house, which gives the eight bedrooms a pleasant sense of discovery and privacy, and the scale suits multigenerational families, milestone celebrations, corporate retreats and group escapes. Up to four dogs are welcome, with a charge for the first.
At the centre of the house is the spacious dining room, with an open fire and seating for sixteen, which makes long breakfasts and celebratory dinners the natural rhythm of a stay. The dual aspect sitting room has a second open fire, a smart TV and French doors to the garden, and works for board games, film nights or an afternoon reading with the countryside in view. The kitchen is set up to cater for large numbers, with a range oven, gas hob, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher, and there is an external utility room for laundry plus a ground floor shower room with washing machine, tumble dryer and space for muddy boots, along with a boot room. The first floor holds a super king with an en suite bathroom, a second super king with a washbasin, a single, a king with a washbasin, and a family bathroom with striking fabric lined walls. The second floor, tucked under the eaves with areas of restricted head height, has two doubles, a twin, and a dedicated children's room with four single beds, a smart TV, games and an en suite shower room, which is usually the most popular room in the house with the under twelves.
Outside, a large lawn and patio with outdoor furniture and a charcoal barbecue give plenty of room for garden games and morning coffee, and there is a private hot tub available at extra charge, well placed for a soak under dark Dorset skies. Four off road parking spaces are provided, along with central heating, wifi, a travel cot, high chair and stairgate, with linen and towels included in weekly and short break bookings. Shared tennis courts and an outdoor pool are a short drive away with allocated time slots, and short breaks run all year round. The house lends itself to bespoke additions: a private chef for a dinner party, a mixologist for a cocktail masterclass, or a yoga instructor on the lawn to start the day.
Complimentary access to Minterne Gardens comes with the stay: a celebrated twenty seven acre Himalayan style valley, believed to have been advised on in its early layout by Capability Brown, where winding paths pass streams, waterfalls and lakes among one of the country's finest collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and rare trees. Private tours of Minterne House can be arranged, uncovering the stories of Admiral Henry Digby of Trafalgar and of Jane Digby, whose life took her from Dorset society to Damascus. Cerne Abbas and its hillside giant lie two miles off, Sherborne with its abbey and castles and Dorchester with its museums and shops are both about ten miles, and the Jurassic Coast is roughly eighteen. Abbotsbury's Swannery and Subtropical Gardens are nearby, and the Dorset Downs offer endless walking and cycling.
