The Colloquy is an eight-bedroom country house on the Herefordshire side of the Welsh border, a few miles from the market town of Kington. Every bedroom is en-suite, some with roll-top baths, some with showers and several with both, and the house sleeps sixteen in total. That makes it a practical base for a family gathering, a milestone birthday or a company away-day rather than a squeeze.
Inside, the house divides into three distinct living areas, each with its own television, surround sound and stereo, and there are four separate kitchens between them. A large party can therefore eat together at one table or split off and cater for itself at breakfast and lunch. Rustic oak floorboards run throughout, with underfloor heating on the ground floor, an open fire in one reception room and hole-in-the-wall electric fires in two others. The walls are hung with work by artists from the Herefordshire and Welsh border country, and there is a media centre with a ten-foot projection cinema screen.
The leisure facilities are unusually generous for a self-catering house: a heated outdoor swimming pool set in the gardens and open from May to September, a sauna, a jacuzzi and a squash court. The gardens were designed by the award-winning Revis Cruttenden and come with furniture and a barbecue, and there is access to the surrounding farm for walks straight from the door. Basic groceries can be delivered free of charge and full catering is available if you would rather not cook.
The Colloquy holds a five-star rating with a Gold award. It sits close to Offa's Dyke Path and the Welsh hills, two miles from the Michelin-starred Stagg Inn at Titley, and within easy reach of the antique shops of Kington, Leominster and Ludlow. Canoeing, karting, horse riding, mountain biking, tennis and walking are all available nearby, with Leominster the closest railway station and Birmingham the nearest airport. Book direct with the owner and deal with the person who actually runs the house.
Additional charges: No additional cleaning fees.
