About The Boathouse

The Boathouse is a one bedroom lodge for two beside Loch na Beinne Moire on the Guisachan Estate, high above the Victorian conservation village of Tomich in the Scottish Highlands. It holds a Gold award and is arranged on a single level. This is a genuinely secluded spot: the views from the lounge, bedroom and dining area take in loch, hills and mountains through expansive windows, and wildlife is part of the daily view rather than an excursion. Inverness is thirty miles away, Beauly station twenty, and the nearest supermarket and shop about ten, which gives a fair sense of how quiet it is here. There are no pets at this property.

A stay here is an opportunity to disconnect properly. The lodge is powered by a wind turbine and solar panels, supplying the fridge, lighting and shower, and it has a modern, odourless composting toilet, so the environmental credentials are real rather than decorative. Inside it is cosy and stylish, with a wood burning stove, a dining table for two, a coffee maker, board games, books and an office area with a desk for anyone who must stay in touch. Towels, bed linen and a welcome pack are provided. The bedroom and bathroom are both on the ground floor.

Outdoors there is a patio, a balcony, a barbecue and sun loungers, and a private hot tub, or spa pool, positioned to make the most of the loch and the silence. The lodge comes with its own rowing boat, so you can take yourself out onto the water for an hour's fishing or simply to drift; there are fishing lakes on the estate, and wild swimming for the brave. The site is dark sky friendly with a stargazing area and a bird watching area, and there is an electric car charging point along with off road parking adjacent to the lodge. Short breaks are available all year round, and a village pub and cafe are a short walk away in Tomich, a conservation village of twenty four stone built cottages dating from the 1850s.

Glen Affric, one of the most beautiful glens in Scotland, is on the doorstep, with Glen Strathfarrar nearby and the Great Glen Way within reach. Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle are an easy drive, the route running along the loch shore to Drumnadrochit and then through Glen Urquhart towards Strathglass; Tomich is four miles from Cannich. Walking and hiking are the main activities, along with cycling, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, paddle boarding, fly and river fishing, angling, boating, pony trekking, horse riding, golf, swimming, stargazing and wildlife watching. For a couple wanting somewhere remote, romantic and quietly extraordinary in the Highlands, with a boat at the door and the stars overhead, this takes some beating.
