The Gun Emplacement is a detached, single-storey coastal cottage standing on the cliff top at Lighthouse Down above St Margaret's Bay, near Dover in Kent. Built by the Army in 1910, it was later the home of Sir Peter Ustinov, who was billeted there during the Second World War and bought it from the Ministry of Defence afterwards; original features remain, and the house was thoroughly renovated in 2000. It sits within National Trust land on the White Cliffs, with open views across the Channel towards France, and sleeps between three and six people in three bedrooms, with one king-size bed and two doubles. Owing to the cliff-edge location, children are not accepted, but up to two dogs are welcome by arrangement. Stays are for a minimum of seven nights.
The sitting room has sliding double-glazed windows on three sides looking out to sea, and a wood-burning stove for cooler evenings. The compact fitted kitchen includes a gas oven with hob, dishwasher, microwave and fridge-freezer, with a washing machine for longer stays, and the dining table seats six. There is one bathroom with a bath and a tiled walk-in shower, plus a separate WC and an airing cupboard. Central heating runs throughout, and the cottage has a TV with Sky, wifi, a cot, bed linen and a welcome pack. Gardens lie to front and back, with a barbecue for eating outdoors, and there is private driveway parking adjacent to the property for one or two cars. Two small steps give access; the layout is not suited to wheelchairs.
The setting is rural and secluded, and suits couples, small groups and walkers who want quiet surroundings and sea air. The shingle beach is a short walk away, and the cliff-top paths lead towards Dover, Kingsdown and Sandwich. Golf, horse riding, sailing, sea fishing, swimming, bird and wildlife watching are all available nearby, and a pub in the village is within a fifteen-minute walk. Places to eat in and around St Margaret's include Wallett's Court, The Cliffe Tavern, The Swingate Inn and the dog-friendly Coastguard on the beach. Dover, with its castle, is about four miles away, and Canterbury Cathedral, the Kent Downs National Landscape and Sissinghurst Gardens are within driving distance. The nearest railway station is Martin Mill.
