The Chaffhouse is one of just three holiday barns at Old Barn Cottages in the small village of Great Sturton, on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape. It sleeps four in two bedrooms, holds a four-star rating with a Gold award and takes up to four dogs. The cottages sit in a courtyard, and the Chaffhouse has its own pretty enclosed seating area overlooking it.
Exposed beams and brickwork with cosy country-style furniture give the barn a homely farmhouse feel. The lounge has comfortable seating, a television and an open wooden staircase leading up to a mezzanine above it, which holds a double sofa bed and provides an extra sleeping area. The kitchen is a well-equipped country one with a quarry tile floor and a dining area for four, and there is a ground-floor shower room. The two bedrooms are a double and a single. A cot, high chair, stairgate, welcome pack, towels and bed linen are provided, along with wifi and a coffee maker.
The site has a combined utility and games room with a washing machine and tumble dryer alongside a collection of indoor and outdoor games including boules and croquet, plus books, magazines and films and a stack of tourism leaflets. Outside there are individual patio gardens with views over the grounds, which include a private wood and a nature trail, a croquet lawn, and a large gravelled parking area taking up to six cars.
Surrounded by open farmland and the big Lincolnshire skies, this is a genuinely restful place. Several country-style pubs, some with fine dining, lie within five miles. The Georgian market town of Horncastle, famous as the county's antique centre, is five miles away and worth a wander with an afternoon tea stop, and it also has good Italian, Thai, Indian and Chinese restaurants along with Magpies, Shakesbys and the Admiral Rodney. Lincoln, seventeen miles or about half an hour, has its castle, cathedral, cobbled streets and plenty of independent shops, cafes and traditional pubs. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at Coningsby, numerous stately homes, country parks and wildlife sanctuaries are all nearby, and the seaside at Skegness and Mablethorpe and the Spalding flower festival are all within easy reach. There is golf, cycling on Lincolnshire's extensive and fairly flat network, and good riding facilities locally.
