The Locks is a substantial seven bedroom holiday house in the village of Rogerstone, a couple of miles from Newport in South Wales, rated five stars with a Gold award. It is built for a large group intent on enjoying itself: a private indoor heated swimming pool, an indoor hot tub, a cinema room, a games room and a disco room, all under one roof, with countryside on the doorstep and a good pub a walk across the field. The setting is a village one, quiet and green, yet the M4 is three miles away and Cardiff city centre a twenty minute drive, which is an unusually convenient combination for a house with this much going on.
The games room has a pool table, an air hockey table, an arcade machine, a retro arcade machine, a basketball machine and a large television, and the cinema room comes with Xbox gaming. There is also a snug, a piano, an office area with a desk, board games and a computer games console, and an undercover lit car port set up for table tennis and table football. The seven bedrooms include two with king size beds, three doubles and a room with a double and two singles, with five of them en suite and two further WCs about the house, so a group of adults sharing is not queueing. The kitchen is fully equipped for self catering, including a range cooker, dishwasher, microwave, freezer, coffee maker, washing machine and tumble dryer, and the dining table seats twelve. Underfloor heating, air conditioning, wifi, Sky and digital television, towels, bed linen, a welcome pack, a cot and a high chair are all provided.
Outside there is a private, secure, enclosed garden with a patio, sun loungers, egg chairs and a cabana bed, and plenty of space for children to play. The hot tub is on the patio area. Secure free private parking takes five cars on a private driveway, and there is an electric car charging point free to use overnight between midnight and six. The house is decorated with a tree and decorations at Christmas. Up to three dogs are welcome, short breaks are available all year round, and birthday and corporate groups are accepted. Guests consistently comment on the space, the number of bathrooms and how easy the house is to get to.
Newport, two miles off, has shops, restaurants and Newport station a mile away, and Cardiff is twenty minutes by car. Attractions within about an hour include the Big Pit National Coal Museum, Tredegar House, the Newport Wetlands Reserve and the Roman remains at Caerleon, with the Brecon Beacons National Park to the north for a day on the hills. Walking and cycling routes run close to the house, with the Fourteen Locks canal flight nearby, and angling, sea fishing, golf, horse riding, archery, karting, mountain biking and swimming all available locally. For a family group or a milestone celebration that wants entertainment on tap and a city within easy reach, this house is hard to fault.
