River Bank Cottage is a secluded cottage right on the banks of the River Esk at Briggswath, a small hamlet between the rugged coast and the North York Moors, three miles from Whitby. It sleeps four in two bedrooms, holds a five-star rating with a Gold award and is allergy friendly. What sets it apart is the outdoor space and the fishing: seasonal salmon and trout can be taken from the cottage's own jetty.
Downstairs there are two living spaces. The kitchen and diner is well equipped with a Smeg fridge-freezer, dishwasher, ceramic hob, cooker and washer-dryer, and the living room has leather sofas, a living flame gas fire and a smart television with Freeview. Upstairs is a master bedroom with a king-size bed, a 32-inch smart television, a hairdryer and plenty of storage, and a guest bedroom with twin beds, another 32-inch smart television and views down towards the river. The bathroom has a separate shower cubicle, a roll-top bath and complimentary bathroom products.
A welcome hamper is left ready along with a good selection of books, games and DVDs, and there is free wifi and provided towels and bed linen. Note that the cottage is not suitable for children under twelve because of the proximity of the river, is strictly non-smoking and does not take pets.
Outside, a long enclosed lawned garden with mature trees leads down to a large summer house with a balcony overlooking the Esk, which is where you watch the wildlife on the river or fish from the jetty. There is a patio, sun loungers, a barbecue, garden furniture, a birdwatching area and secure private parking for two cars, and the cottage is decorated with a tree at Christmas.
A five-minute walk across a footbridge brings you into Sleights, which has two pubs both serving meals, a renowned bakery, a good butcher, a general store and post office, a fish and chip restaurant and a hotel with a fine restaurant, plus a station on the Esk Valley line if you would rather leave the car; a regular bus also runs from yards away. Steam trains come through Sleights station, which pleases railway enthusiasts. Whitby, three miles off, is easily reached by bus, car or train, and Robin Hood's Bay, Sandsend, Staithes and Goathland, better known as Heartbeat country, are all close. The Cleveland Way, Dalby Forest, the North York Moors National Park, Scarborough and Castle Howard are all within range.
